UNC-Chapel Hill Study Abroad
African Studies Center
UNC-CH maintains three formal study abroad programs in Africa: the faculty-led Honors Semester in Cape Town (not restricted to “Honors” students), the Robertson Scholars International Summer in Cape Town (in collaboration with nearby Duke University), and the UNC-based exchange program with the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Many students have also participated in a Burch Field Research Seminar in Ghana. The recent award of a Fogarty Grant to the UNC-CH Office of Global Health will establish a summer institute offering a limited number of undergraduate internships through the University of Malawi, and faculty-led summer programs to Senegal and to Tanzania (in conjunction with a study in Bolivia) are currently under development. Through the Study Abroad Office, our students can participate in 24 additional non-UNC programs in 13 different African countries, spanning all regions of the continent. Other study abroad opportunities available to students include:
- Burch Field Research Seminars (Ghana and South Africa)
- UNC-CH’s Office of Global Health is establishing a summer institute in collaboration with the University of Malawi that will provide a limited number of undergraduate internships
- UNC Morehead Scholars often fulfill their summer service internships in countries such as Ghana, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania
- The Stone Center for Black Culture and History supports a limited number of students who are from communities that are typically under-represented in study abroad programs to travel and research in the Africa and the African Diaspora
- The Burch Foundation and the Office for Undergraduate Research have each funded at least one student a year since 2000 for innovative field research in Africa.

Institute for the Study of the Americas
Study abroad is not a requirement of the Latin American Studies major; however, living and studying in Latin America is highly recommended as an experience that majors should consider. The UNC-Chapel Hill Office of Study Abroad offers a broad range of programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. Visit the Study Abroad Office Website for more information. Thanks to a large Andrew W. Mellon Foundation endowment and the support of private donors, both ISA and the Office of Study Abroad offer new competitive scholarships for majors wishing to undertake study in Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Intensive Yucatec Maya
Each summer the Carolina and Duke Consortium offers intensive instruction in modern Yucatec Maya, with a secondary focus on ancient, colonial, and modern Maya culture. The courses include classroom instruction in Chapel Hill (LTAM 160) or in Mérida, Mexico (LTAM 161), and a field study experience in Yucatán, Mexico for both courses. See the Maya program web site for current course information. The Mellon Undergraduate Scholarship provides a funding opportunity for this program.

- Summer Study in Siberia
The NC Field Studies in Siberia summer program is a new study abroad program for summer 2006 organized in cooperation with the Study Abroad Office, the Carolina Environmental Program, and CSEEES. For eight weeks students will travel to various locations, including Novosibirsk, the Golden Altai mountains, and the Lake Baikal region. Courses include Peoples of Siberia, Conservation of Biodiversity in Theory and Practice, and Siberian Environmental Field Studies. All courses will be taught in English and there is no language pre-requisite.
- UNC Summer in Moscow
In partnership with the Russian State University for the Humanities, UNC offers a six-week program for students to study in the exciting Russian capital, Moscow. Developed in cooperation with UNC's Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, the Curriculum in International and Area Studies, and CSEEES, this program provides a unique opportunity for students to study contemporary Russia first-hand, or to continue Russian language study in an intensive setting. Two tracks are available, one focusing on intensive second year language study and the second offering social science perspectives on contemporary Russia.
- Vienna Burch Field Research Seminar in Austria and Bosnia/Croatia
The seminar provides UNC students with an opportunity to examine the structure, dynamics, and interaction of international organizations; investigate the involvement of the international community in the Balkan conflicts; explore European security and political structure; and learn how the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) works. Based in Vienna, the program examines OSCE headquarter operations as well as field mission activities in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. The next seminar will take place in Summer 2007.
- Semester and Summer Study in Prague, Czech Republic
Through Jerome of Prague College, students are able to take both semester and summer courses taught by faculty drawn from Prague's major academic institutions, including Charles University, the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the Prague School of Economics. All courses are pre-approved for credit. Subjects offered include Economics, Folklore, History, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, Political Science, Sociology, Czech Literature, and Czech Language. Although Czech Language is not mandatory, it is strongly recommended that students enroll in this course to facilitate their integration into and understanding of their surroundings.
- Other programs of interest
In addition to these highlighted programs, the Center works with the Study Abroad Office and the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures to promote study abroad opportunities in Krakow, Poland; Budapest, Hungary; and other locations in Russia.
