New Name

On July 1, 2007, LDS became one of the many programs within The Learning Center. LDS has been renamed The Academic Success Program for Students with LD/ADHD (ASP-LD/ADHD).

Although we have a new name, our role and our mission remain the same: to provide accommodations and services for students with LD/ADHD. We work collaboratively with students to create innovative ways to overcome barriers caused by their disabilities so they can be successful in college (and in life) without lowering academic standards or goals.

New Location

As of July, our office moved into the Student & Academic Services Building (SASB) on South Campus. We are now in the same building with many departments/programs at Carolina (including the Learning Center, the Writing Center and the Department of Disability Services) whose roles support students in addressing both academics and quality of life. See: http://sasb.unc.edu for a complete listing.

New Procedure for Eligibility

The Department of Disabilities Services (DDS), who previously served students with physical and psychiatric disabilities, now has the administrative oversight for determining eligibility for all students with disabilities including those diagnosed with LD/ADHD. This is done in collaboration with staff from the Academic Success Program for Students with LD/ADHD.

  • Students should submit their documentation to the Department of Disabilities Services.  Documentation guidelines have been revised and are posted on the Department of Disabilities website.  See http://disabilityservices.unc.edu/eligibility/document-guidelines.html  for detailed information about the guidelines and submission procedures.
  • You can also visit their main website for general questions and information, or you can call them at 919-962-8300.
  • Eligible students work with staff at the Academic Success Program for Students with LD/ADHD who determine and recommend specific accommodations and services.

Testing Accommodations

Beginning this fall, the Department of Disability Services is overseeing the provision of testing accommodations for all students with disabilities including those diagnosed with LD/ADHD.

What remains unchanged

The staff at the Academic Success Program will continue to manage note-taking and reading technology accommodations for students with LD/ADHD. We will also continue providing direct services to students diagnosed with LD/ADHD including: co-active coaching, understanding disability, self-advocacy and learning strategies. In time, the staff will be expanding the workshops and/or peer support groups that will be available to students diagnosed with LD/ADHD and other students in the general population.

Please feel free to call us or stop by if you have ANY questions or concerns. All of our phone numbers have remained the same.
