First inscription naming Londinium?

On 11 October 2002 various news agencies reported that archaeologists excavating a site in Southwark had unearthed a marble plaque inscribed with what may be the earliest known epigraphic attestation of London’s Latin name from the environs of the capital itself ... The stone bears a religious dedication by an individual who describes himself by the mysterious title of moritix Londiniensium .1 ( S. Corcoran, B. Salway and P. This photograph, taken by Charles Crowther, shows a portion of Hadrian’s Wall and the topography its designers exploited when siting it. The camera looks east, along the wall from a point just west of its intersection with the Roman fort at Housesteads. Although it is one of the most well known Roman monuments in Britain, the wall — together with other Roman sites in the area — persist as an active focus of research. [ read article ]

Ohio State University Excavations at Isthmia

Excavations at the site of Isthmia in Greece (an important pan-hellenic sanctuary of Poseidon) have been going on since the 1950s. At present, excavations are conducted by two American projects, one run by the University of Chicago, the other by the Ohio State University. In a recent post to AegeaNet, Martha Payne alerted us to an NPR story entitled “Unearthing the First Olympics: Archeologists Rebuild Olympic Games Site in Nemea.” This NPR Radio Expeditions piece (which has an on-line summary and audio copy) provides an interesting update on the well-preserved stadium at Nemea, and on the current state of research and restoration work at the site. [ read article ]

UNESCO Updates World Heritage List
