The Walter Royal Davis Library is the largest and most comprehensive collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As the central library for both the Humanities and Social Sciences, Davis houses the university's research collections of material in Ancient History, Archaeology, Classics and Geography. The library’s hours of operation are generally long, except for term breaks and major holidays. In addition to public network terminals, Davis is thoroughly wired for laptop computer use by registered campus network users. Registered library patrons can also check out laptops for use in the building. Wireless network access points provide coverage on the first two floors, the north side of the third floor and the west side of the seventh floor.
Through the generosity of the Academic Affairs Library System and the College of Arts and Sciences, the Ancient World Mapping Center maintains excellent workspace and two offices on the fifth floor of Davis Library. In cooperation with the Circulation Department, the Department of Classics has established a seminar room in Davis to facilitate research in epigraphy and palaeography. The excellent Reference Department also provides GIS Resources and Services, under the direction of the GIS Librarian, Amanda Henley. The general holdings of Davis are rich, including an especially extensive coverage of periodicals relating to Ancient History, Classical Studies, the ancient Near East, archaeology, and Medieval studies. The library’s holdings may be searched via the online catalog.
