3 March 2001; updated 28 August 2004: Tom Elliott

The initial success of the AWMC reinforces the importance of safeguarding its smooth operation for the indefinite future. To that end, we have created a fund to permanently support its core staff and activities, including the acquisition of research materials and the operation of a vigorous teaching and outreach program. This endowment will provide a secure annual budget in perpetuity, ensuring that the Center continues to serve as a source of information and expertise, conducting vigorous research, teaching and public service missions.

How you can help

The help of donors, large and small, is essential to meeting the $2.5 million endowment goal, building on the support of our institutional sponsors and growing ranks of private donors. Contributions are tax deductible, and may be made in any of the following ways:

  • By mail
Download and fill out our AWMC gift/pledge form and send it (along with a check written to “Ancient World Mapping Center Endowment,” if a gift) to: Tom Elliott, Director, Ancient World Mapping Center, CB#8110, 5010 Davis Library, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-8110, U.S.A.
  • By credit card
Please click on the UNC Development Office’s Carolina First web page, select “Credit Card,” designate your gift for “-- Other college department, program or fund” (under the heading “College of Arts and Sciences” in the pull-down menu), and then type in “Ancient World Mapping Center Endowment.” The Development Office will notify the AWMC of the amount and category of the gift. You can also use the Carolina First web page to arrange recurring payments by bank draft, pledges or gifts of stock. Be sure to clearly designate the “Ancient World Mapping Center Endowment” when filling out the online forms.
  • As part of the University’s annual campaign
On the annual campaign form, check the “other” box and write in “Ancient World Mapping Center Endowment.” Return the form and payment as indicated on the form.

Rationale and Details

The $2.5 million endowment is designed to provide an annual budget of $125,000, based solely on an average 5% annual return on investment. Every $4 contributed to this core endowment will be matched by $1 in Challenge Grant funds provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The modest annual budget resulting from the endowment will provide for the following essentials:

  • Lecture series ($5,000 per year)
  • Outreach and support to education ($10,000 per year)
  • Acquisitions and maintenance ($7,650 per year)
  • Operations and training ($8,000 per year)
  • Stipend for a graduate research fellow ($15,500 per year)
  • Visiting postdoctoral research fellowship a few weeks in duration ($5,000 per year)
  • Part-time administrative manager’s salary and benefits ($19,250 per year)
  • Director’s salary, benefits and overhead costs ($54,600 per year)

Additional components may be added to the endowment upon agreement between the university and prospective donors (for example, salary and benefits for a full-time GIS technician), but these contributions may not be matched by NEH Challenge Grant funds.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Arts & Sciences Foundation, and the Ancient World Mapping Center are covered by the University’s status as a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization under U.S. Federal law.
