Grading

Your grade in this course will be based on attendance, behavior in class, participation in recitation sections, five short quizzes, one in-class test, one take-home test and a final examination. Your performance in each of these contexts will be weighed in calculating the course grade as follows:

  • Attendance and behavior at lectures and recitation sections: 5%
  • Recitation section preparation and participation: 10%
  • 5 quizzes at 3% each: 15%
  • TEST 1: In-class test: 20%
  • TEST 2: Take-home test: 25%
  • Final exam: 25%

You may not omit or delay any of these evaluative components (see further the class attendance and disabilities policies). The lecture schedule indicates the date on which each component is administered, and also indicates the corresponding period of lectures and readings on which you will be evaluated.

Recitation sections

See the recitation schedule for details.

Nature of quizzes

Quizzes will be administered during the last 15 minutes of the class period for which they are scheduled. You will be given no more than 15 minutes to complete each quiz. Quiz components may include: one or more maps that must be properly marked or labeled, one or more timelines that must be properly filled in and dated, and/or one or more short-answer identification questions. Quizzes will be completed on handouts provided by your instructor.

Nature of Test 1

Test 1 will be administered on the date indicated in the course schedule, beginning promptly at the start of the class period and ending promptly at the end of the class period. Late arrivals will not be permitted extra time. The test will be comprehensive for the period indicated in the course schedule. The test components will include: one or more maps that must be properly marked or labeled, one or more timelines that must be properly sketched out and dated, and one or more short essay questions. Maps will be completed on handouts provided by your instructor; you must bring “blue books” to class on test day for the remaining components. Any evidence that pages have been torn out of your blue book will result in the automatic loss of one letter grade.

Nature of Test 2 (take-home)

Test 2 will be distributed to students at the end of the class period indicated in the course schedule, and collected from students promptly at the beginning of the next class period. Late submission will result in the automatic deduction of one letter grade for each partial hour of tardiness. The test will be comprehensive for the period indicated in the course schedule. The test components will include: one or more maps that must be properly marked or labeled, one or more timelines that must be properly sketched out and dated, one or more short essays dealing with central themes of the course, and one long essay discussing the historical significance of specific primary source documents. Maps will be completed on handouts provided by your instructor. Essays on this test may be typewritten/printed on plain paper. If handwritten, your essays must be in “blue books.”

Nature of the Final Exam

The final exam will be administered in accordance with the University exam schedule, beginning and ending promptly. The full 3-hour session may be used. Late arrivals will not be permitted extra time. The exam will be comprehensive for the entire course. The test components will include: one or more maps that must be properly marked or labeled, one or more timelines that must be properly sketched out and dated, one or more short essays dealing with central themes of the course, and one or more short essays discussing the historical importance of specific primary source documents. Maps will be completed on handouts provided by your instructor; you must bring “blue books” to the exam for the remaining components.
