The Historical Geography Specialty Group (HGSG) represents and promotes the interests and research agenda of AAG members who focus on historical geography. The HGSG bylaws describe its purpose as follows:
- to encourage historical geographic research;
- to promote historical geographic education;
- to promote the exchange of historical geographic ideas and information;
- to promote the interests of historical geography within the discipline of geography; and
- to develop contacts and coordination with other historical geography organizations and with related specialty groups within the AAG.
The HGSG website provides an array of information, including: a directory of officers and members; information about international and regional meetings (including sessions at the AAG annual meeting); a publications section; information about departments, research and data sources; and listings of news, calls for papers, and job openings.
