FALL TELEVISION LINE-UP
By Claire Stackhouse

Ok, so I know between homework, BSM meetings, and a social life there is very little time to watch television. But you should take a break from reality every once in a while to relax and free your mind from all the stress and watch some good TV (well…at least for 30 minutes). This fall there are plenty of good shows for you to watch - especially shows which feature characters just like you and me. Along with all of the new shows featuring black casts, there are plenty of good returning shows as well. Below is a review of the best that black TV has to offer:

Kevin Hill (UPN Wednesdays @ 9)

Sexy Taye Diggs is the reason why most of you ladies will be watching this new drama. Many of you remember him from movies, How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Brown Sugar, and you also know that besides from being sexy Diggs has a lot of talent too.

Digs plays attorney Kevin Hill, a bachelor who has just inherited a baby from a cousin who has just died. Hill has to drastically change his wild lifestyle to accommodate the ten- month- old. With an interesting storyline and a great actor this new show is sure to be worth your time.

Second Time Around (UPN Mondays @ 9:30)

For those of you who enjoyed Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Parker's relationship in the recently cancelled Showtime drama Soul Food, you will love this new show. Jackson (Kodjoe) and Ryan (Parker) Muse play newlyweds who are giving their marriage a second go around.

Most of the show's humor comes from the couples completely opposite personalities. Jackson is a lot more structured than the free-spirited Ryan. What's good about this show is that the couple's on-screen chemistry is real. Kodjoe and Parker are currently engaged and are expecting their first child.

Girlfriends (UPN Monday's @ 9 p.m.)

Some critiques have called this show the black, Sex and the City. Yes, Girlfriends might feature some of the same topics, but it can not be dismissed as just a rip-off of Sex and the City. Mainly because Sex and the City features white characters and Girlfriends features black characters. Although we live in the 21st century where color seems to matter less and less, there is still a big difference in the life and experiences of a white woman and a black woman.

In addition to dating and sex, Girlfriends tackles such issues as racism, selling-out, and racial identity. It also tackles more serious issues like the effect of the AIDS epidemic on the black community. All of the issues are presented in a very comical way, of course.

At the end of last season central character Joan (Tracee Ellis Ross) is in a never-ending search to find that special someone. Bi-racial Lynn is in the midst of searching for her black father. Toni, the diva of the show, is having marital problems with her white husband and Maya is working out a major book deal for her urban book, Oh Hell Yes.

Will Joan ever finds a man? Will Lynn ever find her father? Will Toni work her marriage out? And will Maya's book deal work out? Tune in to Girlfriend for their fourth season to find out.

The Dave Chappelle Show (COMEDY CENTRAL Tuesday @ 10 p.m.)

If you haven't heard of this hilarious show…umm do me a favor and come out from under that rock. The Dave Chapelle Show is the funniest show on television. The comedy skit based show has been described as somewhat controversial because of all of the stereotypes about race Chapelle depicts. However, these stereotypes appear so obviously ridiculous that they make any one who believes them look silly.

For example, in one episode Chappelle does a skit on a blind black member of the KKK. Chappelle plays this blind man who walks around saying how much he hates black people. He attends white power rallies and yells out the N-word right along with the other white members of the KKK. When he finds out he is black he leaves his wife for being a “nigger lover” and hangs himself. Anyone watching this skit can see how ridiculous the idea of a black KKK member is and how stupid it is for anyone to hold these racist views.

Keep watching Dave Chappelle this season to find out what crazy things he thinks up next.

So you see with all this black star power on television this fall there really is no excuse to not watch.
