What is C-START?
C-START (Carolina Students Taking Academic Responsibility through Teaching) is designed to broaden learning opportunities on campus by transforming the consumers of undergraduate education, the students, into providers. The program fosters dialog and critical thinking by encouraging student initiation of courses that address a diverse range of issues, concerns, and academic interests.
Each year, C-START selects a limited number of outstanding Seniors to offer courses of their own invention. During the fall semester, student-instructors develop their syllabi and lesson plans under the guidance of a faculty mentor and with assistance from the Center for Teaching and Learning. Then, in the spring, they teach small seminars that enroll 10 to 15 Carolina undergraduates. C-START classes meet for one hour and fifty minutes per week, and enrolled students earn one (1) hour of pass/fail credit. The C-START student-instructors receive three (3) hours of graded independent study credit for course preparation and classroom instruction.
