The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Procedures: Obtaining Group Web Space

Groups include student organizations, academic and administrative departments, and special interest groups. For University courses, please see Course Web Space Request.

Procedures

  1. Read Rights and Responsibilities and be sure that your group is properly recognized.
  2. For suggestions and requirements about group web pages read Putting Group Pages on the Web.
  3. Select the Web Information Coordinator for your group and determine who else will work on the group's web pages.
  4. For any group member who does not have an Onyen (UNC UserID), have him or her create one.
File Organization

All web space will be created in your organization's AFS hierarchy. If you do not have AFS space, it will be set up for you. Please note the requirement of authorization by a dean or department head for departmental AFS space.

Selecting a Group ID

Web pages for organizations are associated with an AFS group ID, not a personal ID. For all organizations, select an ID that's easy to remember and represents your group. For example, career for UNC-CH Career Services.

NOTE: You do not log onto the server with the group ID. Whenever you work on the group's web pages, you log on with your personal Onyen.

Requesting Web Space

Student Organizations
To request Web space for a student organization, complete the Student Organization Web Space Request form.

Departments
To request Web space for a University department, school, or faculty or staff special interest group, send a Help Request, from the department chair, organization president, administrative unit director, or leader of the group. Clearly state the name of the group (department, organization, etc.), the type of group (academic department, research group, etc.), the name and onyen of the designated Web Information Coordinator, and the names and onyens of the others who will work on the group's Web pages. The Web Information Coordinator will be notified by email by the Campus Webmaster and given the URL and pathname of the group's directory when the Web space is ready for use.

When you have received notification that your Web space ID is ready for use, you can create web pages for your group.
