Summary of September 20 Web-Walkers meeting

Meeting topics
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics of interest for future meetings include:
-- Electronic discussions on Web pages
-- Intranets: Perhaps something on student information and the
   Registrar's Office
-- Forms and updating databases
Next meeting
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bogdan Leja (Center for International Studies) and Roger Akers
(Information Technology Services) will talk about some of the work they
are doing with electronic discussions on Web pages.

Standards for linking pages into the campus Web
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We discussed the need to have pages readable from a wide variety of
browsers, including lynx, especially if the audience will include people
in other countries. However, we felt there is no standard that should be
enforced, because the need depends upon the content of the page.  Pages
containing general information, such as admissions information, should
ideally be viewable with all browsers. But some special subject areas might
require the lastest version of Netscape. Pages which require special
browsers should be marked as such. Web authors are encouraged to keep in
mind the audiences for their pages and the browsers they might be using.
The Webmaster should provide feedback to Web authors who may not have
looked at their pages with lynx or who have pages that need more
attention.
Selecting featured campus web sites
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Web-Walkers are encouraged to explore the campus Web. When you see
something you particularly like, send the URL to info@unc.edu saying, as
best you can, what you like about it, so that it can be considered for
the featured campus web site. Similarly, if you notice something that you
think does not represent the campus well and feel uncomfortable sending
mail to the author, send a message to info@unc.edu describing the problem
as best you can. You should be aware of the campus policy on Rights and
Responsibilities -- see http://www.unc.edu/campus/aboutweb/howto/resp.html.

Resources for Web developers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We did not have time for much discussion about scanners, books, HTML
software and the like. I want to develop some pages in the section
http://www.unc.edu/campus/aboutweb/howto/ on these topics and will send
mail to the web-walkers list when I'm ready to start assembling info.
Campus Calendar
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jason Purdy (student, Information Technology Services) described the
project he and Margaret Balcom (University Gazette) have been
working on this summer, the beginning of an electronic campus calendar.
It has been fortunate that both Margaret and Jason had time to work on
this project; however, their time was limited and so there was not much
additional input in getting the project started.

The entry part is currently at
http://www.unc.edu/about/provider/cgi/calendar.html. Entries will be
forwarded to Margaret's office for approval and entry into the campus
Web.

The viewing part is currently at
http://www.unc.edu/about/provider/cgi/view_calendar.html but there isn't
really anything to view yet. Jason put in a couple of entries so that we
could see how they would look.

Some areas are color-coded, and it was suggested that Jason use additional
visual clues for the color-blind.

To begin with, there will not be a way to collect events from other event
calendars in the campus Web, such as the events pages at the School of
Medicine or the Music Department concerts. To be included, entries for the
events will have to be submitted via the entry form. Perhaps when a
campus-wide search facility is implemented, a similar collection mechanism
can be applied to the calendar.

It was suggested that there be a special area for announcements and
highlighted events, for example, a frame at the bottom of the screen that
is constantly scrolling special information.
