Summary of Web-Walkers meeting, January 22, on Intranets

Tom Black, Registrar's Office
Michael Phillips, Academic Technology and Networks
Chad Kearsley, Institute for Academic Technology

Tom Black

The Registrar's Office is using a secure server (Apache) with encryption at https://regweb.unc.edu (which requires a userid and password) to display departmental information to university employees. The Registrar's Office uses Focus to generate the documents. Tom showed a couple of the databases:

Tom also showed some statistics on RegWeb use (using AccessWatch software).

Tom (and Marcus Cox) watch what people look for now. They will move information around in the public pages, as needs change, as the school year progresses, shifting for example, from registration info to info about grades.

There was interest and discussion about adding items to the public Web pages about items "coming soon" -- for internal communication within the University about what's in the works.

Michael Phillips

Michael described the type of information ATN maintains for its Intranet, which is not at a public site. The documentation team, primarily Kay Stanley, maintains the site.

Intranets are typically used by the business environment for

We've already got those functions in campus services.

ATN restricts access by domain name; passwords are a nuisance -- people forget the password.

ATN doesn't have any interactive tools yet. They'd like to have:

Michael emphasized that he'd like to make the ATN page more than *a* place to go -- he'd like it to be *the* place for ATN people to go. Web tools, like a calendaring system, won't work unless everybody agrees to use them consistently. In that sense, before ATN can go interactive, it needs 100% buy-in from the organization.

Chad Kearsley

Chad talked from http://projects.iat.unc.edu/VERA/, which is a demonstration version (not the real version) of the IAT Intranet. VERA was developed by Carolyn Kotlas. Carolyn can find anything. She sifts out the good, useful information. She sees how information flows in the office. She interviewed people, asking them what questions they get. Carolyn is the gatekeeper and gatherer, and she keeps the information current, making VERA *the* place to go to find information, even emergency information.

The IAT Intranet is on a local area network that already has security.

Chad talked briefly about Lotus Domino and would be willing to lead a future Web-Walkers meeting on that topic if there is sufficient interest.
