Summary of November 18, 1998, Web-Walkers meeting

Notes from Web Conferences

Internet Librarian '98 (http://www.infotoday.com/il98/il98.htm

Barbara Semonche <semonch@sunsite.unc.edu>
Judy Hallman <judy_hallman@unc.edu>

During the conference, Barbara posted e-mail messages to a list, summarizing activites. See http://sunsite/journalism/internetlibn.html. One session had music playing as people came in, an idea that appealed to Barbara. She mentioned the session by McQueen on Metadata as particularly good, and Nichole Hennig's Usability study, where she watched people use the Web page. She mentioned Anne Mintz (Forbes) session on accuracy and Gary Price's web site.

Barbara particularly liked Dine Around -- groups signed up to gather for dinner and discuss particular topics.

Judy's notes are at http://www.unc.edu/~hallman/il98.html. She learned a lot about search engines and was particularly impressed with the enthusiasm conference participants had for Northern Light (http://www.nlsearch.com/)

Both Barbara and Judy thought the conference presented good, reliable stuff. It was useful, well organized and well presented. They would go again.

WebNet98 (http://www.aace.org/conf/webnet/)

Lynn Eades <beades@med.unc.edu>
Sai Balu <sai_balu@unc.edu>

Lynn and Sai described several interesting sessions covering metadata, HTML, and future developments. But they said that there were too many sessions that were often short and in too many buildings. They were not sure they'd go again.

Attendees

I don't have the list.
