Web-Based Survey and Assessment Tool
Sai Balu <sai_balu@unc.edu>
Instructional Technology Development Group
Academic Technology and Networks
The tool Sai is developing is at http://teach.oit.unc.edu/cit/survey-d/. Log in with your ATN Userid and password. If you are associated with UNC-CH and do not have an ATN Userid, you can obtain one.
The tool is still being developed. Expected production date is November 1, 1998.
Using a web browser and public domain database software, the tool will help instructors gather, store, retrieve, and analyze data. While designed for instructional use, the tool can be used in a variety of other applications. It is easy to use.
The tool provides the following features:
- Create, edit, and delete surveys via the web.
- Password protect surveys.
- Create a question bank.
- Use a survey as an assessment tool.
- Export data for analysis by SAS, SPSS, or Excel.
- Simple analysis of data gathered.
Anyone associated with UNC-CH can use it to gather and evaluate data.
When you create a survey, you can specify an image to go at the top of the survey. You can shuffle questions (change the order). You can use a question bank to create a survey. You can view and edit the survey. Access can be restricted to a list of ATN (Isis) accounts.
You can edit questions and insert questions.
The assessment tool determines how many answers are correct and how many incorrect.
You can copy a survey and edit it to create a new survey.
Clearing a survey clears off the data.
The question bank part is not complete yet.
It will allow you to create a survey by inserting questions from a bank of questions.
There is no module yet to export data.
Sai demonstrated many of the features, showing how easy to use and flexible the tool is.
http://www.pro-survey.com, out of MCNC, is similar, but you pay for it, and it is not UNC-CH oriented.
The tool uses mysql (http://www.mysql.com,) for the backend database and perl for the interface.
Sai is planning to make the tool IMS compliant.
And Sai is planning on using Oracle. The campus has a site license for Oracle.
Export will have several options.
