Web Advisory Committee Charter

Purpose:
The Web Advisory Committee will oversee the creation of a new World Wide Web presence for the University. In doing so, the committee will collect information for use in strategically marketing the University through its homepage. The committee will suggest ways to support the creation and maintenance of Web pages.

The committee will use its knowledge of the UNC homepage to identify areas where the homepage can be improved or where new services can be created. The committee will define the parameters for the work, timeframe, and expectations. The committee will develop a set of specifications for the job on which individuals or groups will submit proposals.

Our work will include:
1. An analysis of the UNC homepage and appropriate levels.
2. A review of other homepages at universities and businesses.
3. Market research.
4. Specifications that will result in an improved homepage, more marketing of the university, and better service to the Universityıs audiences.
5. Ways to make it easy for departments to use new templates and to easily update their pages.
6. Support for staff creating and maintaining pages.
7. An examination of how form follows substance in the creation of pages.

Decision-making authority:
The committee can hire and oversee work by the creator of the new homepage. We should work closely with Marian Moore, Elson Floyd, and others to determine how the policies we suggest can be enforced and by whom.

Committee sponsors:
Elson Floyd, Executive Vice Chancellor, and Matt Kupec, Vice Chancellor for University Advancement.

Committee appointment:
Executive Vice Chancellor Elson Floyd appointed the committee in late November 1997, and it first met in January 1998.

Committee ground rules:
1. Reach decisions by consensus.
2. Focus on priorities.
3. Attend meetings and attend on time.
4. Communicate between meetings about expectations for the next meeting. Use the listserv and other methods to communicate.
5. Make assignments and share the work.
6. All members will share ideas and participate in all phases of our work. (Don't be afraid to talk.)
