Date: Mon, 28 Feb 1994 17:05:00 +0500 (EST) From: Judy Hallman To: unc-gopher@gibbs.oit.unc.edu Subject: Minutes of February 9 gopher herd meeting UNC gopher herd meeting, February 9, 1994 Attendees: Arturo Barrios, Lea Blanton, Andy Broughton, Doug Cutler, Kathleen Crook, Darlene Fladager, Judy Hallman, Mike Holliday, Paul Jones, J. J. Kim, Amy Kreiling, David Kuzminski, Susan Lambert, Debby Morley, Sally Muller, Cindy Rhine, Tom Rutledge, Dennis Sherman, Jeanne Smythe, Suzanne Walker, Lynn Whitener, Laura Zimmerman PRESENTATIONS: Amy Kreiling showed World-Wide Web (WWW) and Mosaic. She pointed out that WWW can be a gopher client. She showed some information on sunsite and mentioned gn, giving information on how to get it. She also showed the X windows gopher client. Dennis Sherman discussed the VMS clients and servers, showing how they work, and he demonstrated the lynx WWW Browser. The VMS gopher client is the curses based client, version 2.011, which runs under both VMS and UNIX (the same code); client-only distribution is available at TRLN, with full distribution from niord.shsu.edu, boombox, or sunsite. The gopher server is 1_2VMS-1. Gopher+ is under development. There is no WAIS interface. Associated tools include a CSO clone and indexed keyword searching. With regard to WWW, the VMS gopher server can serve some of WWW's HTML (HyperText Markup Language) documents. The CERN server HTTPD is said to work under VMS. For more information, use URL hhtp://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/Daemon/Status.html. For a WWW browser (client) use lynx, a character mode browser for WWW. The current version is 2.1.1. Version 2.2 is in beta test. (Dennis says it has been released now.) Jeanne Smythe demonstrated the MVS gopher and discussed VM. The MVS gopher client is an ISPF application. You can print a file (prt) or extract (ext) a file and save it as one of your own files. Version V211 is in production. Version V3R1 is coming soon. The MVS gopher server provides TSO Help and Spires information; NC Vital statistics data is coming. VM is running a client from Rice. VM does not have a server. Arturo Barrios discussed the OS/2 gopher; SAS documentation is maintained on a local OS/2 gopher server. Paul Jones discussed DOS, Windows, and Mac clients. He pointed out that both WSGopher (for windows) and TurboGopher (for the Mac) make good use of the windows environment. While Mosaic clears the screen when it brings up new information, WSGopher and TurboGopher just open another window. He also noted that both products make use of the mouse. There appears to be very little, if any good experience in the UNC gopher herd with DOS and gophers. SOFTWARE SOURCES gopher: ftp sunsite.unc.edu; login as anonymous; enter your e-mail address at the password prompt. cd pub/packages/infosystems/gopher/boombox-mirror The Macintosh client is in Macintosh-TurboGopher/TurboGopher1.0.8b4.hqx The Windows client WSGopher is currently being tested. Other clients (WinGopher and HGopher) are in the Windows directory. The VMS client is in VMS/gopher2.011.zip and the server is in VMS/Gopher1_2VMS1.zip For VMS software, you can also gopher trln.lib.unc.edu, select Other TRLN Services, VMS Gopher Development & Porting, VMSGopher Source Code and Documentation. GN recognizes the protocol from the request and responds appropriately. This allows the use of WWW browsers like Mosaic in their native mode. . . .
