December 21, 12:00-1:00, 011 Sitterson Hall: Update on software for clients and servers for the various platforms; feedback on Home Page development, if there is time. Designing the UNC-CH Home Page: Judy Hallman and Kathy Thomas showed a possible organization for the UNC-CH Home Page that resulted from an ad-hoc meeting of the two and Mona Couts (Health Sciences Library). The goal is to ensure there is a place for each of the items residing in the current Info service. (Hallman would like to eliminate Info as a separate entity.) The proposed areas were: [1]Welcome UNC-Chapel Hill [2]Directories [3]Calendars and recreation [4]Weather, news, publications [5]Academia [6]Student life [7]Faculty & staff information [8]Libraries and global resources [9]Research and institutes [10]Office of Information Technology [11]Administrative Data Processing [12]SunSITE Archives [13]About the UNC-CH home page Some areas had the next level outlined. After considerable discussion, we came up with the following proposed structure (I just added Alumni; we didn't discuss an Alumni section, but there probably will be information for and about alumni in the database soon): [1]Welcome to UNC-CH and Chapel Hill [2]Student information [3]Faculty & staff information [4]Alumni information [5]Directories [6]News and publications [7]Departments & organizations [8]Libraries [9]The rest of the Internet, including SunSITE [10]About the UNC-CH home page [1]Welcome to UNC-CH and Chapel Hill We'll put the weather and the Chapel Hill Transit Guide here, as well as the brochure "The First State University." We talked about having customized views for of the University and the town for prospective students, prospective faculty, spouses moving to the area, and visitors to town. That should be doable, but might take a little time to develop. And we'll have links to other local Web and gopher servers, like Triangle Free-Net. [5]Directories I think we decided we preferred one directory for everybody, instead of one for students and one for faculty and staff. Mary Overby (ADP) is working on this part. [6]News and publications Each publication will also appear under the department or organization responsible for it, but they will be listed as a group. [7]Departments & organizations Departments and organizations will be presented in different views. One view will be alphabetic, following the front of the Campus Directory; one view might follow the University's organizational structure. We'll note that some department's have their own servers and provide a link to them. This section will also take time to develop. We can do a lot of it from the Graduate and Undergraduate Bulletins, and other information that is already online. [8]Libraries Libraries will include access to the outside world from the librarians' point of view, as well as access to online catalogs. [9]The rest of the Internet, including SunSITE We'll put pointers to interesting places to visit here (SunSITE and others), and probably a list of new/hot items. [10]About the UNC-CH home page This section will give contact information and the like, and it will contain the "What's new" section. Note: Calendar/events will not have a separate section. Items of interest to students will be in the student section. Similarly, faculty/staff and alumni calendars will be in the proper sections. And items of interest to visitors would be in the visitor part of the Welcome section. Of course, there will be a lot of crossposting (sports listings everywhere). Kathy Thomas and I will use this proposal as the basis for building a new home page. You'll have opportunities to review the work as it progress, but if you see anything we've overlooked or potential problem areas, please let me know. One last item -- We discussed switching access to campus information (Info) from gopher to WWW. There don't seem to be any obstacles to doing this. People who come in as VT100s (from the dial-in menu, for example), will go into lynx instead of gopher. The view and navigation will be a little different, but users shouldn't have any problems adjusting.
