The Carolina Women’s Center appoints a Faculty
Scholar each
semester as a way to support faculty projects related to the CWC’s
mission to
empower women and promote their equality in all spheres of life and to
celebrate the work of women that betters humankind. The
Faculty Scholar program is supported
through the Office of the Provost and provides funds for one course
replacement
during the semester of appointment.
At some point during their semester in residence, Faculty
Scholars give a public presentation about their project.
CWC Faculty Scholars are provided with office
space and equipment. Scholars are
encouraged to attend CWC activities and participate in the planning of
events at
the Center related to the subject of their scholarly activity.
Professor Ming Lin from the Department of Computer Science has been selected as the Spring 2008 Faculty Scholar.
Dr. Lin will work on a project titled "An Integrated Approach to Increasing the Representation of Women in Computing" as the Spring 2008 Faculty Scholar. This project responds to the disproportionately small presence of women in computing. Dr. Lin will be designing a new course to integrate cutting-edge research into the undergraduate classroom and include women undergraduates in research opportunities, engage in outreach to area middle schools as an early recruitment strategy, and enhance mentoring and advising efforts in her department.
The Fall 2007 Carolina Women's Center Faculty Scholar was Francesca Talenti, Department of Communication Studies. Previous scholars were Diane Kjervik (School of Nursing), Maxine Eichner (School of Law), and Kimberly Brownley (Department of Psychiatry).
