Jazmin Jackson

Jazmin Jackson’s ability to embrace life’s new experiences is perfectly suited for the Carolina Covenant and a university full of ways to help students succeed. She knows what works for her and will share it with other students.

And share she did, especially on her Work-Study job in the Scholarships and Student Aid Office. Jackson's role in the office grew as she learned the loan application processes so she could help parents and students and build lender relations. As a Work-Study student, she was the perfect person to help other students locate Federal Work-Study jobs on campus and assist them with payroll forms. In her final year at Carolina, she wanted to give back to the Covenant, so she asked to work directly with the Covenant by preparing orientation materials for new students and speaking at Covenant outreach events.

At the same time, Jackson progressed academically as she studied in the Kenan-Flagler Business School. She practiced an openness to new experiences and new people. And it worked.

Jackson wants others to hear what worked for her at Carolina. “Definitely go to class and enjoy learning,” she says. “Look into all the resources on campus, not just all that the Carolina Covenant offers. Network and talk with many different people.”

Sounds like her personality and time at Carolina prepared her for adventure and change in life. After graduation, Jackson enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology. The two-year program will send her to Florence, Italy, for a year. She will spend the second year in New York City.

“I’ve designed clothes since the fourth grade, I think,” Jackson says. “I learned to sew in the tenth grade, and have sewed dresses, business suits and other clothes. One day, I hope to start my own fashion company.”

As a business major, she honed a desire to succeed in the business world – where people skills can be just as important as knowledge. “Kenan-Flagler Business School is adamant about group work and building teams. It helps you realize how everybody’s working styles are different, and that we do our work on different schedules," she says.

The youngest of eight children, Jackson listened when her parents stressed the importance of education. “My parents always told me to focus on school so that I would get in a college. They said that they would worry about how to pay for it, so the Covenant was a true blessing.”
