About the Facility

Mathematics and Science Laboratory

Photo of Drs. Veal and Brantley using technology in the classroom. This spacious room serves a variety of purposes in mathematics and science education. At the middle school level, it is an exemplary instructional model in which students explore mathematics and science topics in an unimpeded, hands-on, open manner. It also serves as an instructional room for pre-service science and mathematics education. Methods courses taught here give teacher education students access to middle school youth and create an opportunity to further their understanding of adolescent development.

The Center for Mathematics and Science Education uses this space to conduct two-week intensive institutes during the summer months and two-day workshops during the academic year, serving teachers in a 15-county region surrounding the Research Triangle area.

Facility Description

Photo of labThe large classroom provides instructional space equipped with octagonal laboratory workbenches and worktables for students. One door exits to the outside, opening the classroom to environmental science and other hands-on applications. The room has a fume hood, needed for any experiments that require ventilation. A lab preparation room adjoins the classroom, providing space where chemicals, glassware, materials, math manipulatives and science gear can be stored and instructors can prepare solutions and construct apparatus.

In order for this room to serve as many populations as possible, it is equipped with seamless technological integration including interactive television cameras and microphones for distance education capability. The incorporation of technology for data analysis and dissemination via distance education enables the room to serve more people than a traditional classroom. This distance education component allows the School of Education to offer more classes and workshops while reaching more people throughout the state in rural areas.
