Workshop on “Introduction to Rasch Measurement:
Theory and Application”

March 26-29, 2007
Monday – Thursday

The School of Education will partner with MetaMetrics, Inc. and the National Institute of Statistical Sciences to sponsor a four-day workshop on “Introduction to Rasch Measurement: Theory and Application.” Speakers are David Andrich, professor of education at Murdoch University in Western Australia, and Andrew Kyngdon, senior research scientist with MetaMetrics, Inc. The workshop will combine lecture, question-and-answer and small-group instruction. Participants will have an opportunity to analyze their own data.

Rasch measurement has had an accelerated application in educational assessment in the last two decades. Studies have assessed the validity of the construct by placing items on a continuum of achievement and demonstrating that each item operates the same way across the continuum and across different groups, such as genders and backgrounds. In the workshop, a case study will be presented that brings together assessment, item construction and the use of statistical indices in determining the validity of item sets.

The workshop is free to attendees. Understanding of Item Response Theory and Rasch measurement is not required. Space is limited and registration is required.

Time: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. daily
Place: Carolina Center for Educational Excellence, 9201 Seawell School Road, Chapel Hill
Contact: Andrew Kyngdon, akyngdon@lexile.com
