When UNC-Chapel Hill created its department of religious studies in 1947, the study of Judaism and Jewish history assumed an important role in its curriculum. Today, the University is home to prominent scholars working on Jewish religion, culture, languages, literature, history, and philosophy. Courses on Jews and their culture attract more than 1,000 students annually and are integral to liberal arts education at Carolina. Jewish Studies brings the valuable lessons of the millennia-old Jewish experience to bear on current issues. The dedication to inquiry and study at the heart of Jewish culture dovetails with Carolina's tradition of academic excellence.

The Center seeks $24 million in private support to:

  • Launch an undergraduate major in Jewish Studies and establish the foundation for M.A. and Ph.D. programs. These programs hinge on recruiting and supporting outstanding faculty through endowed professorships, visiting faculty positions, teaching assistantships, and opportunities for faculty research that enhance undergraduate teaching. Total: $12 million
  • Invest in opportunities for students to study abroad and to bring students and teachers from other countries to study at UNC-Chapel Hill. These funds will support the next generation of rising scholars, including promising graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Total: $3 million
  • Build and promote library and archival resources, including collections of private papers, synagogue and business records, and family documents. Total: $2 million
  • Bring scholars, artists, musicians, filmmakers, and public figures to campus and other locations in North Carolina and the region for seminars and symposia, lectures and performances. Total: $5 million
  • Provide an endowment that will support staffing needs of the Center, the publication of educational materials and newsletters to inform contributors and the general public, and technology for teaching and outreach. Total: $2 million

Donations are encouraged, and all will be recognized. Annual pledges at all levels are essential to the Center’s future. Such gifts will establish an impressive network of friends whose collective generosity will inscribe the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies in the Book of Life for generations to come.
