The Elsie Kaplan "Mother" Shapiro ZBT

Undergraduate Research Award
in Jewish Studies

Award amount: $1,000

The Elsie Kaplan “Mother” Shapiro ZBT Undergraduate Research and Travel Fund in Jewish Studies was established in 2008. With this grant, the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies supports undergraduate student research focused on an aspect of Jewish Studies. Research awards may be used for various expenses related to conducting research, including travel expenses.

To submit a research proposal please send:

  • An abbreviated CV, biography or resume;
  • A project proposal (no more than three double-spaced pages, 12 pt font). The proposal must include a faculty advisor’s signature and should:
    1. describe the research project and its relation to the field of Jewish Studies;
    2. explain the importance of the grant for completing the research, and include a budget; and
    3. explain the importance of the research

Three copies of each application should be directed to:

Elsie Kaplan Shapiro was housemother at Zeta Beta Tau for 22 years. This undergraduate research fund was established by her family and a group of fraternity brothers who wanted to ensure that her generous spirit and dedication benefited future generations of Carolina students.
