Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Information

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill community sends our thoughts to those in the state of North Carolina and along the east coast who have been hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy. In the wake of this devastating storm, UNC is planning various relief and recovery efforts. Please send information to the Carolina Center for Public Service at ccps@unc.edu. Details will be posted on this site as well as the Public Service and Engagement at UNC Facebook page.

Because of the combined impact of winter storms and Hurricane Sandy, more than 8 million Americans are without power, and many states have been flooded at record rates. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this massive storm.

News and Announcements

Extended Disaster Relief is preparing for its first winter break relief trips to two destinations:

  1. The first break trip is to Rockaway and Breezy Point, N.Y. and Jersey City, N.J. to provide volunteer service work. This trip departs Friday night, Dec. 14 and returns to Chapel Hill Thursday, Dec. 20.

  2. The second break trip is to New Orleans to provide rebuilding efforts through the Saint Bernard Project. This trip departs Tuesday morning, Jan. 1 and returns to Chapel Hill Sunday, Jan. 6.

Exact times are still being planned and will be announced by the trip leaders. The trip fee is $160 for either trip and covers the cost of the vans, gas, accommodations and all meals during the trip (except for meals while on the road to and from Chapel Hill).

If interested in joining the New York/New Jersey trip, send a request email to cmw@live.unc.edu. If interested in joining the New Orleans trip, send a request email to trmartin@live.unc.edu.

You must include your name, PID and class year (FR, SO, JR, SR, other). Be sure to also indicate if you are a UNC employee and willing to be a driver or if there are any special dietary needs.

If you would like to support Carolina’s response efforts, including future relief trips to affected areas, you can contribute to Carolina's Disaster Relief Fund (0779) through the Carolina Development office.
