Eligibility and Application Process

Call for Class IV of Faculty Engaged Scholars at UNC Chapel Hill

August 2012 – May 2014

The successful nominee for this program should possess the following qualities:

1. An active research agenda that contributes to the discipline and has an impact on the community (community can be defined broadly, including grassroots, nonprofit and business organizations; educational and governmental agencies; neighborhoods or individuals with a common interest or identity);
2. A desire for new learning about engaged scholarship;
3. An interest in working with faculty across disciplines, with community stakeholders and with students;
4. The capacity to effectively communicate and disseminate the results of their research and engaged scholarship to public, academic and other external audiences; and
5. A commitment to actively participating in the two years of the program, including production of a project.

Priority for participation will be given to tenure-track faculty with any length of service at UNC-Chapel Hill, and fixed-term faculty who have been at UNC-Chapel Hill for at least five years. It is a competitive application process and each application will require the written support of a dean or department chair stating support for the applicant.

Selected applicants will be expected to actively participate in Faculty Engaged Scholar sessions. In the first year of the program, sessions include an initial orientation and two sessions per semester. Attendance of at least 80 percent is required to receive the stipend and remain in the program. Dates and times for the first year are listed below:

August 20	4 – 7 p.m.	Orientation and Dinner
September 28	8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.	Session 1
October 26	8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.	Session 2

April	(date and time TBA)	Session 4

Key to the success of the program is the support of the administration for the schools and departments involved. To ensure that there is a common understanding of the requirements for participation, we require all applicants to have their deans or chairs submit this online form supporting their applications as well as their participation if selected.

New scholars will be announced in late May. On Monday, August 20 the new scholars will have an orientation followed by dinner with previous Faculty Engaged Scholars, the selection committee and the course directors. The two fall sessions will be held on Friday, September 28 and Friday, October 26.
