EVENTS

1. 5/18 - Engaged Scholar Seminar Series
Implementing Evidence-based Approaches to Reduce Disparities in Colorectal Cancer Screening will be held on May 18 as part of the Engaged Scholar Seminar Series at 9 a.m. in the Pleasants Room of Wilson Library. Networking and a continental breakfast will begin before the event at 8:30 a.m. This seminar will include lessons learned and results from a colorectal cancer screening project in Greensboro, N.C. The goal of the project is to close gaps in colorectal cancer screening and survival rates among uninsured and African-American individuals in Guilford County. The project is based on pilot work and includes research partnerships with community members throughout the research process. The seminar is co-presented by Cathy Melvin, research associate professor in Maternal and Child Health, and Kelly Green, research associate at Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Registration is open online. Faculty, fellows, post-doctoral and graduate students, as well as interested undergraduates from across campus and community members are invited to attend. The seminar is co-sponsored by the Carolina Center for Public Service, the Center for Faculty Excellence, the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute, and the Kellogg Health Scholars Program.

1. Substance abuse and HIV interventions summer internship
The Substance Abuse Treatment Evaluations and Interventions (SATEI) Research Program at RTI International is offering a summer internship working with HIV and substance abuse prevention and intervention studies. PUBLIC SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

1. 5/18 - Volunteer at Go Chapel Hill-Carrboro Spring Roll Ride
The Town of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department seeks volunteers for Go Chapel Hill-Carrboro Sprint Roll RIde on May 18 at 5:30 p.m. Activities include music, food, prizes, raffles along with the bike riding. Come volunteer, and don't forget your bike. For details, contact Stephanie Kujawski or call 919-968-2878.

2. Help kids with special needs learn to swim
The Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department seeks volunteers 18 years and older to work one-on-one with kids with special needs in adaptive aquatics class. Volunteers are needed Wednesday evenings from May 23 to June 27 for classes at 6:30 - 7:15 p.m. and 7:30 - 8:15 p.m. at Homestead Aquatics Center. Volunteers will motivate and praise efforts of swimmers and must be comfortable swimming with kids with special needs. Volunteers should commit to all weeks of class. 3. Volunteers needed for horseback riding lessons and camp
The North Carolina Therapeutic Riding Center (NCTRC) seeks lesson and camp volunteers. NCTRC offers the fun of horseback riding, along with its physical and psychological benefits, to children and adults with special needs. Volunteers are needed to help with a six-week summer lesson session as well as week long summer day camps (June 18 and August 3). Volunteers work directly with riders and horses in class. 4. Global Scholars Academy needs volunteers
Global Scholars Academy (GSA) is a charter school that operates on an extended day (7:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.) year-round, academic calendar. GSA is committed to serving children of all educational backgrounds in Durham County. Enthusiastic and passionate volunteers who enjoy working with students are needed. If interested, contact Mr. Breylon A. Smith, extended day coordinator, about available opportunities.

5. Girls on the Run coach needed
Ephesus Elementary School in Chapel Hill needs a female volunteer to coach third to fifth-grade girls on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-4 p.m. using the Girls on the Run (GOTR) curriculum. Training and materials will be provided by GOTR. The fall season starts the week of September 24 and ends the week of December 17, 2012. GOTR uses the power of running and being active to change the way girls see themselves and their futures. If interested, complete an online coach application.
