
OPPORTUNITIES AT THE CAROLINA CENTER FOR PUBLIC SERVICE
1. 2/6 - Last call for Community Engagement Fellowships for graduate students
The Carolina Center for Public Service is accepting applications for the new Community Engagement Fellowship program until 11:59 p.m. on February 6. Up to five fellowships of up to $2,000 each will be awarded in the spring to develop and implement engagement or engaged scholarship projects that (1) employ innovative, sustainable approaches to complex social needs and (2) have an academic connection. Fellows are responsible for planning and implementing their projects, but work in collaboration with community partners and faculty mentors who are familiar with their topics or geographic areas. The fellowships run from March to October with seminar participation in the spring and fall, and project implementation during the summer. Returning, full-time graduate students (individuals or teams) at UNC-Chapel Hill are eligible to apply with preference given to interdisciplinary teams of students. EVENTS
1. 2/10 - Counter Tobacco hosts presentation "More Power to You"
Counter Tobacco announces an upcoming visit from Jonathan Polansky of Onbeyond LLC. Polansky is an expert in media advocacy and has played research, strategic and creative roles in more than 200 campaigns in a dozen countries on issues ranging from wild fisheries to domestic violence. He was creative director of San Francisco-based Public Media Center for more than two decades and currently partners with leading health groups and agencies intervening against the global tobacco industry. Polansky will present a talk "More Power to You: Practical ways to change how corporations and governments behave" at noon on Friday, Feb. 10 in McGravran Greenberg, room 1301. The talk is open to the public with a refresher/problem-solving workshop following from 2-4 p.m. Space is limited to 20; please RSVP to Allison Myers.
2. 2/27 - Global Poverty Project
The Student United Way of UNC-Chapel Hill hosts the Global Poverty Project's "1.4 Billion Reasons" tour to on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012. The event takes place in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union, Great Hall from 7-8:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help publicize this presentation. GRANTS & AWARDS
1. 2/24 - Order of the Grail-Valkyries solicits nominations
The Order of the Grail-Valkyries recognizes individuals who have contributed to UNC by enhancing the campus's intellectual climate. Those with outstanding character have made significant contributions to our university through innovative service, excellence in scholarship and dynamic leadership. Eligible candidates include faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. Nominations are available online and close on February 24.
2. Summer funding for global work - information session
Come learn about the various summer opportunities to do global work sponsored and funded by the Center for Global Initiatives. An information session will be held February 9 from 6-7 p.m. in the FedEx Global Education Center, room 1005. For details, visit our website.

FELLOWSHIPS & INTERNSHIPS
1. Interns needed for Chatham Arts Council
Chatham Arts Council in Pittsboro, N.C. seeks interns with an interest in grassroots-based arts programming and arts administration. The intern will participate in event planning; outreach efforts to schools, churches and other nonprofits; daily administrative tasks like creating and distributing fliers and answering general customer inquiries; blogging and other publicity efforts like maintaining and maximizing our social media presence. We invite fresh ideas, allow our interns the freedom to work creatively, to lend input and to assume increasing responsibility based on their needs. LEAFLIGHT, a statewide charity based in Chapel Hill, seeks two software development interns to work with a team building a financial services web application with mobile-enabled interfaces. The project is for 12 weeks during the late spring and summer 2012 with 20 hours per week required both on-site and with a flexible remote option. PUBLIC SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
1. 2/6 - UNC Red Cross blood drives
The UNC Red Cross Club announces blood drives at the following locations during the month of February: Monday, Feb. 6, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Student Union, Great Hall; Tuesday, Feb. 7, noon - 4:30 p.m., Student Union (bus drive); Tuesday, Feb. 14, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Student Union, Great Hall. 2. 2/6 - Help feed hungry kids in Chapel Hill and Carrboro with TABLE
TABLE offers for two fresh, healthy snacks programs for children in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area. Table seeks volunteers the first two Mondays of every month to help prepare healthy snacks and share them with elementary school children in local low-income area after-school programs. 3. 2/7 - School volunteers needed this spring
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools needs school volunteers this spring. Stop by the Lincoln Center, 750 S. Merritt Mill Road (CM bus route) and look at the opportunities to help students in grades K-12 for one - two hours a week for a semester. Drop in days are Tuesday, Feb. 7, between 9 a.m. and noon or Wednesday, Feb. 8, between 1-4 p.m., or call 919-967-8211 ext. 28281 to schedule another time. Please allow 20 minutes to sign up and choose a school placement.
4. 2/8 - Help kids with special needs learn to swim
Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation needs volunteers, 18 years and older, to work one-on-one with special needs children in its Adaptive Aquatics class on Wednesday evenings from February 8 - April 25 (no class March 6 or April 4). Classes are 6:30 - 7:15 p.m. and/or 7:30 - 8:15 p.m. at Homestead Aquatics Center. Volunteers motivate, praise and have fun with participants. Volunteers must be comfortable swimming and commit to all weeks of class. Swimming instruction will be provided. Call 919-968-2813 or email Marian Kaslovsky by February 8.
5. 2/17- Get involved with UNC Dance Marathon

6. Volunteer at El Centro Hispano
El Centro Hispano in Carrboro seeks tutors to help kindergarten to sixth-grade students with homework on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Volunteers may select one day, but it is important that tutors commit to volunteering for the duration of the semester. We can work with various programs that require volunteer hours. Contact Jose Torres-Don if interested.
7. Apply to join Human Rights Center's new refugee committee
The Human Rights Center of Chapel Hill and Carrboro is looking for passionate leaders (particularly underclassmen) to join the Refugee Community Partnership (RCP) committee. RCP plans to survey local refugees across Orange County and hopes to understand their needs and document their stories in the process. For details, contact Asif Khan.
8. FAC International summer internship applications being accepted
For the past two years, the Carolina Microfinance Initiative (CMI) International Program Guatemala team has been working with CMI's microfinance organization, FAC (El Fondo de Apoyo Communitario). This summer CMI will return to Guatemala City to further support, develop and expand the initiative. 9. Have fun while helping elementary students learn
Frank Porter Graham Elementary School is looking for tutors for its after-school program at Carolina Apartments on Highway 54 by-pass in Carrboro. The program runs Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3 - 5 p.m. Volunteers will work with an engaging, culturally diverse group of students in kindergarten to fifth grade as they work to improve their proficiency in reading and math.
