Public Service Awards - Overview
The Carolina Center for Public Service honors individual students, faculty, staff and university units and organizations for extraordinary and exemplary public service through annual Public Service Awards. The awards include the Robert E. Bryan Public Service Award, the Ned Brooks Award for Public Service, and the Office of the Provost Engaged Scholarship Award. A description of each award is below. Award nominations are generally due in January.

The Robert E. Bryan Public Service Award celebrates the legacy of alumnus Robert E. Bryan ’26 of Newton Grove, N.C., a successful businessman, entrepreneur and public servant. The award is for a specific effort (rather than an overall record) exemplifying outstanding engagement and service to the state of North Carolina that is characterized by:
- working in partnership with community members
- inspiring and involving others, and/or helping others to serve
- responding to a practical problem, issue or concern of the state
- working to assure the impact in the community is lasting

The Ned Brooks Award for Public Service honors the contributions and values of Ned Brooks, who has continued to advance the University’s mission of service and engagement since 1972. The award recognizes a UNC-Chapel Hill staff or faculty member whose career has consistently bettered the greater community by:
- encouraging active involvement of others in service to and engagement with the community beyond the University
- directly providing public service beyond the University
- mentoring, inspiring and providing opportunities for others to effectively make a difference in the larger community

The Office of the Provost Engaged Scholarship Award was established in 2000 by Provost Dick Richardson to recognize extraordinary public service and engaged scholarship at UNC on behalf of the state of North Carolina. This award recognizes faculty members or university units for excellence in responsiveness to community concerns and strong community partnerships.
Two awards recognize annual achievements in engaged teaching and engaged research.
