Are there other ways I can meet the service-learning requirement?
YES!
- If you want to take an Independent Study class or any other class that is not designated as a service-learning or public service class and you believe it already meets the three requirements, you can submit an Appeal Form for the class.
- You can work with your professor to incorporate the requirements of a service-learning class (30 service hours, reflection, and connection of service to academics) into an existing academic course or Independent study. This could include submitting weekly journal entries to your professor for him/her to read and review and submitting a final paper that ties the course curriculum to your service work in the community. You would then need to submit an appeal form.
You can submit your appeal form to us in person or by campus mail (CB#3142). Be sure to include the course syllabus and all relevant course information.
Are there service-learning opportunities offered outside of UNC - Chapel Hill?
Yes, another great service-learning resource to check out is the International Partnership for Service Learning and Leadership. IPSL is a nonprofit organization in the U.S. that administers educational programs in fourteen countries. Go to http://www.ipsl.org for more information.
Where and how do I record the hours associated with service-learning classes in the PSS Database?
My service hours link: Enter the course name and call number in the service log section heading, "Class/Committee." Enter the nonprofit organization that is benefiting from your service under either the "Campus" or "Community Organization" heading(s) and proceed to record your service hours for the course.
The required hours for the course would be RESTRICTED hours.
Any extra hours, over the required, would be UNRESTRICTED hours.
My other requirements link: Type the course name and call
number under the heading "Service Learning Class #1 or #2." NOTE: Only one
