Rebuilding Environment And Communities Together (REACT)

    Thursday, December 2nd
    4 p.m.
    Union Room 3413

Hurricane Katrina was one of the worst natural disasters to hit North America. Even after five years, there is still much relief, support, and attention needed in the area. Through this training, we would like to assess the personal, social, cultural, economic, and political effects following a major disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina.  In addition to physical damage, we want to approach the problem through environmental and psychological standpoints. By evaluating the ecological problems, we can learn how disasters destroy ecosystems and how this relates to rebuilding the community. Unfortunately, the psychological and social perspectives are often overlooked when reconstructing an area. However, they are essential to reconstructing society, families, and everyday life. By discussing these problems, we can REACT and help people reintegrate into their communities, and finally reestablish hope for the future.

On December 4th, 2010, there is a volunteer opportunity at Battle Park from 10 a.m. to noon.

Food & Water Watch: Activist Skills Training

    Sunday, December 4th
    Noon-2 p.m.
    405 B West Franklin Street

Food & Water Watch, a non-profit organization that advocates for safe and healthy food, and safe and affordable drinking water is working on a campaign to clean up hog factory farms in North Carolina.

Right now there are more pigs than people in North Carolina, and these pigs generate about 40 million gallons of waste per day.  Unfortunately, this waste is being held in massive, open-air pits and is also sprayed within 75 feet of people’s homes and schools.  It’s time to move towards a more sustainable agricultural economy, and the first step is to stop these worst practices of the factory hog industry. Food & Water Watch will be holding an activist training to develop or hone your outreach and educational skills, and learn more about the campaign and future steps.

Please click here to RSVP for the event.
