This page includes information and links you will need for some of the technology aspects of this course.

ATN user ID

First, you will need an ATN user id (a.k.a. isis account, atn email account). If you do not have one already, you may request one online. (You will need this account even if you already have an email account with another service provider such as Mindspring because you need an ATN user id to put Web pages on the UNC Web server.)

Listserv

The listserv allows you to send email to the whole class using one address. The name of your class listserv is ART111. To subscribe to the listserv, go to the listserv subscribers' page, choose subscribing or unsubscribing to a list, type in your email address, your full name, and the name of the list (ART111). Once you are subscribed to the list, you may send mail to the list subscribers by sending an email message to ART111@listserv.unc.edu.

Web Page Space

Before you can put a Web page on the UNC Web server you must activate your personal Web space on www.unc.edu. To do this, go to the ATN page for subscribing to user services. Type in your user id (e.g. jsmith) and your password. Click continue and then choose Web page publication. The URL for your Web pages will begin with http://www.unc.edu/~youruserid.

Netscape Composer

We recommend using Netscape Composer to create your Web pages. Composer is an html editor that works just like a word processor. It is installed on all ATN lab machines. For more information on Composer, how to use it, and how to upload files, read the ATN document on Netscape Composer.

Finding and Evaluating Information

You can find information on the Web using search engines and/or Web directories (also known as indexes). Search engines search the Web using programs called spiders or robots. Many search for a word in the full text of documents on the Web. They are powerful but non-discriminating unless you know how to use them well. Hotbot is an example of a powerful full-text search engine. Directories are compiled by actual human beings who assign Web pages to subject categories and sub-categories. They may not be as powerful as search engines, but they allow for a more focussed, refined search. Yahoo is an example of a Web directory.

As you probably know, not everything on the Web is of high quality (or even correct). There are some basic guidelines you can use to help you assess the value and credibility of a Web site. Davis Library compiled this resource for Web site evlauation and review.
