Traceroute Gateway

This page provides a gateway to the standard UNIX traceroute program which determines the route across a network taken by packets from one host to another host. In this case, the traceroute will start from this server, located at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It will display the path taken to reach the host or IP address you have listed in the box above.

You can use this utility to verify connectivity of a host and determine how the host is connected to the Internet. You can also determine the path taken from UNC-Chapel Hill to the specified host. This will allow you, for example, to determine where packet loss may be occurring when you attempt to connect to hosts on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. It will also allow you to determine whether routing difficulties, either on the Internet or on the local UNC-Chapel Hill network, may explain problems connecting to hosts on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.

This is an experimental server. If you have any questions or comments about its functionality, feel free to send electronic mail to the address listed below and we will attempt to get back to you shortly.
