WHEN CAROL L. FOLT was installed as Carolina’s 11th chancellor and first woman leader in October 2013, she said, “As America’s first public university, Carolina became the gold standard. The founders passed the baton, and the future is up to us. How can we fulfill this honorable charge in a way that is ever fresh and relevant?”

Folt – an internationally recognized scientist, award-winning teacher and accomplished administrator – has worked to fulfill that charge by championing Carolina as a great global public research university. Her priorities have included preserving and expanding the University’s academic excellence, access and affordability, and deep commitment to North Carolina.

Vice Chancellor for Development Search Update

January 14, 2013

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I have appointed an 11-member search committee to help identify candidates to become the University's vice chancellor for development. I will charge the committee, chaired by Lowry Caudill, an alumnus and member of our Board of Trustees, co-founder of Magellan Laboratories and an adjunct faculty member, at its first meeting next week.

With the search for the University's next chancellor well under way, it's important to initiate the process now to time the vice chancellor search so my successor will have an opportunity to provide input and be involved in the interview process and final selection. (We also are using this strategy with the search for the executive vice chancellor and provost, as I outlined in a recent campus email.)

I consulted with Chancellor Emeritus James Moeser, who had to deal with two vacant administrative positions when he became chancellor in 2000. He confirmed my thinking that initiating these key searches now would help accelerate the transition process within the administration and put my successor in the best position after taking office.

I am grateful to Julia Sprunt Grumbles for her continued service as interim vice chancellor. A Carolina alumna, Julia is the former corporate vice president of Turner Broadcasting in Atlanta. She has done an excellent job overseeing the central development office since last September.

Joining Trustee Caudill on the search committee are faculty, administrators and alumni representing a cross-section of the University community. They are:

Sincerely,

Holden Thorp
