WHEN CAROL L. FOLT became Carolina’s 11th Chancellor, and 29th in the lineage of leaders that date back to Carolina’s founding, she said: “As America’s first public university, Carolina became the gold standard. The founders passed the baton, and the future is up to us. How can we fulfill this honorable charge in a way that is ever fresh and relevant?”

Folt – an internationally recognized life scientist, award-winning teacher and accomplished academic leader – has worked to fulfill that honorable charge by placing Carolina’s students at the center, advancing the university’s academic excellence, championing Carolina as a leading global public research university and focusing on innovation through the development of new avenues for entrepreneurship that are translating world-class ideas into real-world applications.

Video Highlights of Final Bain Study

July 21, 2009

Dear Carolina community:

We’ve just posted the final report from Bain & Company, the global business consulting firm that’s been working with us over the past several months. It’s on the Carolina Budget Information Web page off www.unc.edu. The posting includes a follow-up video presentation to our interim report in April with the major highlights and a printable summary. We’ve also included a link to the complete 100-plus page report, which is the focus of a presentation by the consultants this week to our Board of Trustees.

Bain has provided us with a series of potential strategies to streamline operations and become more effective. Now it’s up to us to study these proposals and determine our plans for implementation.

The Bain study is an important tool for us now as we continue to deal with the economic crisis. If we take this report seriously and follow up on its advice, I think we’ll be better positioned for the future.

The video presentation and Web page provide details about how we plan to move forward in assessing these recommendations, take action and track the results. I hope you’ll take the time to watch the presentation and scan the full report. Please let us know what you think by sending your feedback via e-mail to budgetideas@unc.edu.

Thanks for all you do for Carolina.

Sincerely,

Holden Thorp
