WHEN CAROL L. FOLT was installed as Carolina’s 11th chancellor and first woman leader in October 2013, she said, “As America’s first public university, Carolina became the gold standard. The founders passed the baton, and the future is up to us. How can we fulfill this honorable charge in a way that is ever fresh and relevant?”

Folt – an internationally recognized scientist, award-winning teacher and accomplished administrator – has worked to fulfill that charge by championing Carolina as a great global public research university. Her priorities have included preserving and expanding the University’s academic excellence, access and affordability, and deep commitment to North Carolina.

Attend University Day; Watch the Video Address Online

October 8, 2009

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

Monday, October 12, is University Day and a time when we celebrate our accomplishments and consider Carolina's future. Everyone is invited to participate.

I hope to see you at 11 a.m. in Memorial Hall for the annual University Day convocation. Gov. Bev Perdue is our featured speaker. We'll also present Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus Awards and enjoy performances by student musical groups. For details, see http://www.unc.edu/universityday. Classes will be canceled from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Attendance is considered work time for staff employees, who are encouraged to seek advance approval from their supervisors.

Also on Monday, we'll post my video address to the campus community on the University's Web site, www.unc.edu. The speech will reflect on Carolina's accomplishments and challenges over the past year, and will outline what will be important to remain successful as one of America's great universities in the future.

Sincerely,

Holden Thorp
