Message from Chancellor Holden Thorp
September 21, 2012Dear Carolina family:
I'm so grateful for the significant show of support by the faculty, staff, students, trustees and alumni that I have received this week. I also deeply appreciate the support of our trustees, UNC President Tom Ross and the UNC Board of Governors throughout these recent months. And today, I was overwhelmed by the gathering on Polk Place. I am humbled and grateful. Thank you!
It feels great knowing that so many of you want me to stay beyond this year. But I am still confident that it is in the best interest of the University, my family and me to go back to the faculty next fall.
We've made a lot of progress in the past several years, but there is more work to be done. For the next nine months, I will do everything needed to make Carolina an even greater University. These are challenging times for public higher education, but you have shown that our future is very bright. We will never waver from our commitments to access to higher education, access to health care, and the creation and dissemination of knowledge that satisfies human curiosity and enables citizenship, equity and prosperity.
Together, we are the light on the hill.
Let it shine.
Holden Thorp
