Administered by the honorable Patricia Timmons-Goodson, Associate Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court
"Do you, Holden Thorp, solemnly swear that you will support the Constitution of the United States; and do you solemnly and sincerely swear that you will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the State of North Carolina and to the constitutional powers and authorities which are, or may be, established by the government thereof; and that you will endeavor to support, maintain and defend the Constitution of said State not inconsistent with the Constitution of the United States; and in entering upon the responsibilities of the Office of the Chancellor of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, do you undertake to fulfill its duties to the best of your abilities and without fear or favor, to cherish and encourage sound scholarship and the search for truth and to dedicate all the powers of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to the intellectual, moral and physical training of youth and to the development of a moral and enlightened citizenship; do you further promise to dedicate this University to impartial and sympathetic service to all the peopleĀ of North Carolina; further do you swear you will well and truly execute the duties of the Office of the Chancellor of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to the best of your skill and ability according to law, so help you God?"
