Beijing

Friday, December 8

Arrive.

Saturday, December 9

Morning: Visit Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City.

Midday: Attend lunch hosted by the UNC School of Social Work. Attendees will include Dean Jack Richman and Professor Guo Shenyang, along with Dr. Linna Hao Director of the Division of International Collaboration, National Population and Family Planning Commission (NPFPC). The School of Social Work and the NPFPC have collaborated on a research program for two years on topics including reducing aggressive behavior in elementary school children.

Sunday, December 10

Morning: Visit Great Wall at Simatai.

Afternoon: Visit Center for Logistics and Digital Strategy recently established with UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School and Tsinghua University. Activities have included co-sponsoring two conferences on Olympic logistics in advance of the 2008 Summer Olympics. Noel Greiss, UNC research associate and adjunct professor, will attend.

Meet with Tsinghua President Gu Binglin or Vice President Kang Kejun.

Evening: Health-care reform conference reception and dinner.

Monday, December 11

Morning: Health-care reform conference opening, including introductory remarks to attendees.

Afternoon: Meet with Peking Union Medical College President Liu Depei. Tour the medical campus including Quintiles Transnational Corp. facilities.

Evening: Tour Lenovo Innovation Center.

Tuesday, December 12

Morning: Joint interview with Dr. Min Weifang, executive vice president and chairman of the University Council of Peking University, on a China Central Television (CCTV) program about making public higher education affordable. CCTV is the English-language 24-hour news channel of CCTV, China´s largest national TV network. Other scheduled media interviews during the chancellor's trip include the China Economic Observer, China Education TV and the education journal International Talent.

Midday: Tour Peking University.

Afternoon: Receive an honorary professorship from Peking University during a special ceremony presided at by Professor Ding Ning, Vice Dean of the School of Arts. Deliver remarks on global universities. Participants will include President Xu Zhihong, who will speak and lead the conferring ceremony.

Late afternoon: Speak during the closing ceremony for the health-care conference. Remarks will include a welcome to attendees to attend a follow-up event planned in Chapel Hill in 2007.

Shanghai

Wednesday, December 13

Mid-morning: Arrive.

Midday: Tour Shanghai Museum.

Afternoon: Attend luncheon hosted by a UNC alumnus. Attendees will include other alumni, as well as faculty and students from the Fudan School of Journalism. The Fudan group will include participants in a joint project with the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication to provide worldwide online coverage of the International Special Olympic World Games in Shanghai in October 2007.

Late afternoon: Visit Shanghai Conservatory of Music and meet with Conservatory Vice President Zhang Xianping. UNC’s Department of Music has conducted exchange programs with the conservatory.

Thursday, December 14

Morning: Tour of Bund and Beyond, the historic Shanghai waterfront district.

Afternoon: Depart for return to Chapel Hill.
