Mr. Schwab’s opening remarks:
- Welcomed committee members to the meeting and indicated that the committee would be going into closed session after Mr. Funk’s evaluation of the search process and progress.
- Announced the next meeting, then called on Mr. Funk.
Mr. Funk’s remarks:
- Called attention to two recently announced vacancies, the first at Dartmouth College where President Wright will step down in June of 2009, ending a forty-year career as leader of the College. The second announcement was from President Nichol, tendering his immediate resignation as President of the College of William and Mary. Mentioned that the average tenure of chancellors/presidents is from four to six years, depending upon the study being read.
- Still in the process of recruiting candidates, but very pleased with quality, depth, and strength of the pool. Considers it the best pool in the past five years. Many factors contribute to this, including the excellent reputation of UNC-Chapel Hill, the sense of quality of faculty and students, and the evidence of state support. North Carolinians believe UNC-Chapel Hill to be a special place and respect and support the institution. The quality of life is also an important factor.
- The pool is diverse; many outstanding women and minority candidates. The number of sitting presidents, provosts, and leaders of major educational associations and think tanks adds to the diversity in experience.
- Amazed and pleased with the number of candidates with Carolina ties, either as graduates of Carolina or by virtue of birth or past residency.
- The process is where we had hoped to be at this point in time.
There being no further business for discussion in open session, Mr. Schwab called for a motion to go into closed session.
Ms. Mason read motion to go into closed session; motion seconded by Mr. Davidson. Motion passed.
The committee went into closed session to consider and evaluate the qualifications of candidates under consideration.
Mr. Schwab called for a motion to return to open session.
Ms. Mason presented the motion to return to open session; motion second by Ms. Grumbles. Motion passed.
Mr. Schwab asked if there was additional business to bring before the committee; there being none, he called for a motion to adjourn.
Ms. Grumbles moved that the committee adjourn; Mr. Patterson seconded the motion. Motion passed. Meeting adjourned at 4:22 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda A. Naylor, Assistant to the
Chancellor Search Committee
