UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor James Moeser arrives
in Singapore and attends a UNC-sponsored reception with National
University of Singapore (NUS) key administrators and faculty that
evening. UNC alumni and Singapore Summer Immersion Program students
also attend.

Thursday,
June 30
The Association of American Universities (AAU)
and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) host a tour
of the city, with insights from an NUS professor.
Chancellor Moeser and the UNC delegation are
guests at a luncheon hosted by Lily Kong, Vice Provost, NUS and
Tan Tai Yong, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, NUS. Afternoon
activities include a tour of the NUS campus, given by UNC students
in the Singapore Summer Immersion Program. UNC alumnus Alston Gardner,
a 1977 UNC history graduate who generously funds the Singapore Program,
also attends. The UNC delegation has an informal discussion with
the students about their experiences.
In the evening, Moeser attends a welcoming reception
and dinner with university leaders representing the AAU and the
APRU and participating in a roundtable a first such event
for Asia. S.R. Nathan, president of Singapore and NUS chancellor,
hosts the event for the roundtable delegates at the Istana, the
official residence of the president of Singapore.

Friday,
July 1
AAU/APRU roundtable begins in the morning. Hosted
by the National University of Singapore, the roundtable addresses
global developments in university research and education. More than
50 leaders attend, representing areas including Canada, Chile, the
United States, China, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia,
Russia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia and New
Zealand. Dr. Richard Brodhead, Duke Universitys president,
also participates in the roundtable. Topics include the role of
universities in promoting international understanding and cooperation,
innovations in internationalization of education in the Asia Pacific
and North America, and the role of universities as the world globalizes.
Dinner that evening is hosted by Mr. Wong Ngit
Liong, NUS Council; the guest of honor is Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, Prime
Minister of Singapore.

July 2
Chancellor Moeser arrives in Bangkok on Saturday
afternoon and attends a reception with alumni, new admissions and
UNC students that evening.

July 3
On Sunday, the chancellor tours the Royal Palace
and other sites in Bangkok. Dinner is with Kenan Institute Asia
trustees. Khun Anand Panyarachun, former prime minister of Thailand
and current Kenan Institute Asia chairman, hosts the dinner. U.S.
Ambassador to Thailand Ralph L. Boyce also attends.

Monday,
July 4
Chancellor Moeser visits the offices of KIAsia
and is briefed by program mangers on current projects. He also visits
Bumrungrad International, a state-of-the-art hospital facility recently
profiled on 60 Minutes. The tour is led by Ruben Toral, director
of the hospitals marketing division and a 1985 graduate of
UNC. Dinner is with senior officials of major Thai universities.
