1.     What does it mean to be pro-choice?

Contrary to what some may claim, pro-choice does not mean pro-abortion.  Pro-choicers support a womans right to make decisions concerning her own body.  We support a comprehensive sex education program in schools and an increase in the availability and affordability of health care and contraception so that a woman will not be faced with an abortion decision.  If a woman does decide that an abortion is necessary, we support her right to have a safe, legal, and private decision.

2.        Why is there a need for a pro-choice organization on a college

campus?

Choice USA works as an advocate and ally of college women.  Because

many college women are sexually active, we believe that they should be

fully informed of their reproductive options, the availability of

contraception and emergency contraception, and the services that Student Health offers.  Student Health offers a basic gynecological exam,

pregnancy tests, prescriptions for contraception and emergency

  contraception, and counseling services.

3.       What types of activities are Choice USA members involved in?

Because one of the major missions of Choice USA is to inform, handing out information and answering questions by tabling in the Pit and at other organizations events has become an important group function.  Last year Choice USA members also organized two religion and choice panels and co-sponsored several Womens Week events, including the popular Scrumptious Sex Ed event in the Pit.

4.      How can I make a difference as an individual?

The most important thing that you can do is to become well-informed of the issues facing women today such as where your state and national representatives stand on reproductive rights, what it means to be pro-choice or pro-life, and the current status and availability of contraception, emergency contraception, and sex education in your state.  Check out the NARAL website or join the Choice USA listserv to stay informed of current legislation and send a letter to your representatives letting them know that you support a womans right to make decisions about her body.  Also, come to a Choice USA meeting to find out how you can make a direct impact on our Carolina campus.
