CIT MOVES OFFICES TO HANES HALL
On Friday, December 19, the ITS Center for Instructional Technology staff currently located in the basement of Smith building will move their offices to the 4th floor of Hanes Hall. After the move, exam scanning and course evaluation services will be located in Hanes. The CIT video services staff will remain in Peabody Hall.
If you have questions, contact Kathy Thomas at 962-6042.
CIT CONFERENCE CALENDAR UPGRADED/MOVED
The UNC-Chapel Hill Center for Instructional Technology maintains the "Calendar of World-Wide Educational Technology-Related Conferences, Seminars, and Other Events" website. Recently, we upgraded to a new version of our calendar software (iCal from Brown Bear Software at http://www.brownbearsw.com) and moved to a new URL. This has resulted in a more reliable service and should eliminate the periodic outages we experienced with the older version. The calendar is now available at http://confcal.unc.edu:8086/.
(Note: during the CIT's move to Hanes Hall on Friday, December 19, the calendar will be offline while the server is in transit to our new offices.)

EpiDoc is a set of guidelines and tools under development by an international team to support the electronic encoding of ancient inscriptions (writing on stone, wood, metal, etc.) The EpiDoc guidelines are based on the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). (See http://www.tei-c.org/ for information in the TEI.) The EpiDoc project website is at http://www.unc.edu/awmc/epidoc/.

RALEIGH DEMOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS WORKSHOP
The Local Demographic Analysis Workshop (LDAW) will teach you to extract, query, download, analyze, map, and present 2002-1990 demographic data for Raleigh and surrounding communities. These data can provide grant writers, social researchers, and community planners with powerful tools for analyzing community changes.
In this hands-on workshop participants will use data from the 2002 American Community Survey (ACS) and 2000/1990 Census of Population and Housing for small-area, regional, and national analysis. Participants receive a LDAW workbook that includes the workshop presentation, exercises, reference materials, and a Demographic Data Resource CD. This CD includes useful GIS tools such as ArcExplorer and several shapefiles for the entire U.S. Participants will also receive Information Activist, a quarterly e-letter highlighting new data-rich websites and interesting social research.

ITRC TIP: WRITE ON A SLIDE DURING A PRESENTATION
As a presenter, haven't you wished you could write on a slide--to draw a diagram or underline a word, for example--in the middle of a slide show? Microsoft PowerPoint includes a virtual annotation pen that enables you to write on a slide while giving a presentation.
To use the annotation pen during a slide show:
1. Open the presentation in Slide Show view.
2. Right-click in the window, point to Pointer Options, and click Pen. Now you can use your mouse as a pen.
3. When you are done using the pen, press ESC.
ITRC TIP: EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT FROM GOOGLE
In keeping with the spirit of the season, here's a couple of neat tricks for using Google to keep track of what Santa's elves have done with your packages:
Google will now search for UPS, FedEx and other numbers:
UPS tracking numbers example search: "1Z9999W999999999"
FedEx tracking numbers example search: "fedex 999999999999"
Patent numbers example search: "patent 5123123"
FAA airplane registration numbers example search: "n199ua"
FCC equipment IDs example search: "fcc B4Z-34009-PIR"
The link for this on the Google site is at http://www.google.com/help/features.html#number.
