TALKING TO THE WALL: MARCH CONSIDERIT PRESENTATION
ConsiderIT with Colleagues, CIT's Series on Teaching with Technology, presents "Talking to the Wall: The Satisfactions of Non Face-to-Face Communication."
When: Wednesday, March 26, 12:00 noon - 12:50 p.m.
Where: R. B. House Undergraduate Library, room 207
Professor Evelyn Daniel, School of Information and Library Science, and Terri Buckner, Instructional Design Consultant, School of Education, will address the pedagogical and social advantages and disadvantages of using both synchronous and asynchronous discussion tools. Specifically they will discuss the types of activities that can be supported in distance education courses as well as web-enhanced courses. Special attention will be given to designing activities and writing discussion prompts that truly stimulate discussion and interaction among students.
"ConsiderIT with Colleagues -- Teaching with Technology at UNC-Chapel Hill" is a series sponsored by the Center for Instructional Technology. Faculty, TAs, and staff are invited to share and discuss selected teaching and learning issues related to technology.
2003 UNC TEACHING AND LEARNING WITH TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE
The 2003 UNC Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) Conference will be held at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, NC on March 27-29, 2003. This annual event provides professional development for faculty, staff, and administrators throughout the UNC system who are interested in the effective use of technology for teaching and learning. Deadline for registering is Monday, March 17.
Many sessions feature examples of technology-supported instruction and address issues such as implementation, learning outcomes, and student perspectives. Other sessions address technological, pedagogical, and administrative support issues associated with TLT.
For more information and to register, go to http://www.unctlt.org/special/conference2003/.
All of the Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI) models will transition on April 7. All orders placed after that date will be for the new models. The Desktop bundle will now include a flat panel monitor, instead of a CRT monitor, and the larger-footprint standard desktop with the extra bay. We anticipate delivery of the desktops and R-Series laptops to begin the week of May 5. Due to the late introduction of the T model by IBM, we anticipate delivery for it will be delayed until the week of May 26.
If you are anticipating placing an order for the new models I am requesting that you contact me directly as soon as possible. This will allow me to better coordinate with IBM manufacturing so that we will have an adequate number in the initial production run to meet your needs. The new pricing and specifications are posted at: http://www.unc.edu/cci/index/ccishop/short.html.

APRIL TECHNOLOGY SOURCE WEBCAST FEATURES UNC-CHAPEL HILL/NCSU STAFF
The Technology Source sponsors Author Forums, free webcasts on a variety of higher education topics. The Wednesday, April 16, 2003, webcast will feature Diane Chapman (North Carolina State University, formerly of UNC-Chapel Hill School of Public Health) and Todd Nicolet (UNC-Chapel Hill School of Public Health). They will answer questions about their "project approach" to course development. This formal, team-based operation makes use of consistent standards, trackable processes, standardized tools, and structured communication to facilitate technology initiatives. IBIBLIO FEATURED IN N&O ARTICLE
The Raleigh News & Observer recently featured an article on UNC-Chapel Hill's ibiblio. "The Wide, Wild World of ibiblio: You Never Know What You'll Find on This Online Archive," by Christina Dyrness, is available online at http://www.newsobserver.com/business/story/2312271p-2170517c.html
ibiblio.org is a nonprofit Internet collaborative at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. For more information and links to all ibiblio collections, see http://ibiblio.org/.
On March 5, Gary Price, a library and information research consultant based in Washington, DC, gave a public talk sponsored by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and LAUNC-CH (Librarians' Association at UNC-Chapel Hill). Price shared valuable information on Web research and tools for managing Web information. Links to resources he shared at the talk are available at http://www.ibiblio.org/journalism/garyprice3.html.
MAJOR WIRELESS NETWORK SECURITY CHANGES COMING MARCH 26
UNC-Chapel Hill currently has approximately 250 wireless access points on campus with hundreds of active wireless users, including many faculty who use wireless in their classes. Currently, it is possible for anyone associated on a given access point to easily "snoop" all of the traffic being generated by everyone else associated on that particular access point. Given the range of critical applications being used, including financial transaction, grades, and other applications that contain private personal information, and the inherent lack of security in wireless connections, there is a clear need to implement new policies that will improve the security of data communication over the wireless network.
Several changes in campus wireless services took place during February and more are scheduled in March to improve security on for wireless users. ITS Networking will be enabling (and mandating) WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and disabling the SSID (Network Name) broadcasts on all wireless access points on campus.
On February 26 WEP was enabled on all campus access points in Optional mode. If you have WEP configured on your computer, it will be operational now.
On March 26 WEP will become mandatory (i.e., you won't be able to connect to campus wireless access points if you don't have WEP properly configured on your computer). The SSID will no longer be broadcast by the access points (i.e., you won't be able to connect to campus wireless access points if you don't have the SSID/Network Name properly configured on your computer).
For information on how to set up these configuration changes on your system, go to http://www.unc.edu/security/campus/wireless/. You will need your Onyen and password to get access to this site.
To review the history and rationale behind these changes, go to http://www.unc.edu/security/campus/wireless.html.

ITRC TIP: SCROLLING THROUGH A MESSAGE IN PINE
If you use Pine for email, having to use the arrow keys to scroll to the beginning and end of a message can be frustrating. Try this instead:
1. Type "W" to bring up the "Word to search for" command.
2. At the "Word to search for" prompt, enter CTRL-Y (hold down the Control Key and press the "Y" key) to go to the first line of the document or CTRL-V to go to the last line.
