Blackboard 6: What Is New
This course focuses on becoming familiar with Blackboard 6.0's new features and is recommended for any instructor currently using Blackboard 5.5.1. Topics covered will include: easier ways to manage your course content, new customizing options, a new assignment tool to replace the digital dropbox, and improvements in the assessment and gradebook area. The format will be presentation followed by extensive time for hands-on practice with instructor guidance.
Introduction to Blackboard 5.5
For instructors, teaching assistants, and IT support staff with no prior Blackboard experience, this course should be taken before "Blackboard 6: What Is New." It focuses on the basics of 1) posting content to Blackboard sites, 2) using Blackboard's communication tools, 3) customizing sites, and 4) controlling access to them. Blackboard's strengths and limitations as a courseware platform will also be discussed. Attendees are encouraged to bring their course materials with them on disk.

BROWSE CAMPUS LIBRARIES' SHELVES OF NEW BOOKS FROM YOUR DESKTOP
Shelves of pristine, newly-acquired books are an attraction for library visitors who like to keep up with the latest publications in their fields. You can also virtually browse our campus libraries' new books shelves online from your home or office. The UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries' "New Books" web page lets you search for new book acquisitions by topic, by library or collection, or by call number. "New Books" is located at http://www.lib.unc.edu/newbooks/.
ITRC TIP: SHORTCUT TO LOCK YOUR COMPUTER
Problem: You're working at your computer, but need to step away for a moment. Your computer is accessible to passersby, but you don't want to shut down your machine: it's inconvenient to restart it and wend your way back to where you've left off working.
If you're using Windows 2000 or XP, you can "lock" your computer by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and then clicking "Lock Computer." You can also create a Desktop shortcut that will lock your computer when you double-click its icon:
1. Right-click in an open area on your Desktop. From the shortcut menu that appears, select "New," and then click "Shortcut."
2. Copy and paste the following system path into the location field:
%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll LockWorkStation
3. Click "Next" to continue.
4. Give the shortcut a name.
You now have a Desktop shortcut with that name. If you'd prefer a different icon, you can select another:
1. Right-click on the icon. From the shortcut menu that appears, click "Properties."
2. Under the "Shortcut" tab, click "Change Icon."
3. If a selection of other icons does not appear, copy and paste the following system path into the field labeled "Look for icons in this file":
%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
4. Double-click the icon of your choice.
5. Click "OK" to finish replacing the default icon.
After you've locked your computer, a "Computer Locked" alert appears, prompting you to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to unlock it. To finish the process, enter your network password and click "OK."
