Speaker Selection

The speaker selection committee is composed of four students, the faculty chair, the faculty secretary, two distinguished faculty members, and the chair of the commencement committee. The committee is advisory to the chancellor, and he makes the final decision on the speaker. December commencement speakers are traditionally respected members of the faculty. The May Commencement speaker is traditionally given an Honorary Degree. For both the December and May commencements, the Chancellor selects a speaker who has made significant contributions to the world and who will honor the graduates, their parents and friends, and the faculty.

A LETTER TO THE FACULTY FROM THE FACULTY CHAIR

Dear Colleagues:

We write to invite you to join us in the joyous events of Commencement Weekend 2008 on Saturday May 10 (Hooding of Ph.D.s) and Sunday May 11 (Commencement). More detailed information is available here.

Our students' accomplishments are remarkable, and their friends and families value our roles as teachers, mentors, and scholars. Celebration of Commencement events is central to building a sense of community within our University. You're invited to wear academic regalia, but you are welcome regardless.

On Saturday, May 10, the Doctoral Hooding ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. in Memorial Hall. The ceremony will feature remarks by Dr. Wayne Pond, current Director of the Program in the Humanities and Human Values, who earned a Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976. Each graduate will be called to the stage to receive the doctoral hood from his or her advisor. Faculty members are invited to assemble in front of New West at 9:30 a.m. for the processional.

Commencement is on Sunday May 11 at 9:30 a.m. in Kenan Stadium. This year's speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient is Miss Jessye Norman, world renowned opera singer. The essential role of the arts and humanities in undergraduate education at Carolina will surely be reinforced by Miss Norman's address. We will honor our graduating students and the following outstanding recipients of honorary degrees: Peter Cortland Agre (a Nobel laureate in Chemistry), Heather Munroe-Blum (a psychiatric epidemiologist and advocate of improved public policy for science in Canada), Phillip Palmer Green III (a developer of computational strategies that have been central to the sequencing of the human and other genomes), and Anthony Eden Rand (current North Carolina Senate Majority Leader).

Faculty Marshal Trudier Harris will lead the faculty processional, which will form at 9:00 a.m. on the second floor of the Kenan Football Center at the west end of the stadium. Parking will be available in the Rams Head Deck for faculty participating in the ceremony , and a reception will follow on Polk Place. In case of severe weather, the ceremony will move to the Dean E. Smith Center (in that case, faculty should use Entry D and park in the Koury Lot adjacent to the Smith Center).

Many of you have attended Commencement in the past, and we welcome you again. For those who have yet to participate in this venerable academic tradition, please join us. We would appreciate an e-mail to Jane Smith at jane_smith@unc.edu so that we can have a count of participants in advance. Help make these events memorable and support our students at this year's Commencement ceremonies. We look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely yours,

Joseph Templeton Trudier Harris

Disability Services, Seating and Parking

Stadium Seating*

If you or the guest(s) in your party can walk approximately one (1) block (no hills) and can climb approximately 10-12 short stadium steps, we encourage you park in the Park and Ride lots.

The Friday Center (Highway 54 East) or University Mall (15-501 Bypass) are available and parking permits are not required. Shuttles (free) will transport you and your party to Gate 2 at Kenan Stadium.

Family Medicine, Dean Smith Center , Bowles Lot, Cardinal and Dogwood Parking Decks are served by shuttles transporting the party to Gate 6.

A section of the stadium on the north and south side has been “reserved” to limit the number of stairs encountered by persons with limited mobility. If you contact the Department of Disability Services, see contact information below, we will provide seating passes (8 guest maximum) so that your party may sit together. There is very limited accessible seating for guests using wheelchairs at the stadium seating level (Concourse).

*In the event of inclement weather and the ceremony is relocated to the Dean Smith Center , these seating passes will not be valid. Graduating students are required to obtain separate tickets.

Ground Seating – (Seating Passes Required)*

Guests using aids or appliances (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.) and unable to access steps in the stadium, will be provided seating in the stadium at ground level. Although space is limited, only the guest requiring assistance and up to 2-3 additional guests will be permitted to sit on the field. The rest of your party will be asked to sit in the stands. Please note that seating on the field does not provide any protection from weather. Guests are encouraged to bring hats, parasols and bottled water as this area is often in direct sunlight.

*In the event of inclement weather and the ceremony is relocated to the Dean Smith Center , these seating passes will not be valid. Graduating Students are required to obtain separate tickets.

Parking – (Permit Required)

Parking for guests requiring ground seating will be provided in the Rams Head Center Parking Deck (Level 2). Only one (1) vehicle per family.
