James MoeserTO: All Degree Candidates

FROM: James Moeser, Chancellor

DATE:  January 2003

As you complete your coursework and prepare for graduation, I offer you my sincerest congratulations on a job well done. I'm looking forward to sharing your joy and celebration during Carolina's 2003 Commencement Weekend. Activities will begin Friday, May 16, and end Sunday, May 18.

In particular, I hope to see each of our degree candidates at the Commencement Ceremony, which begins at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, May 18, in Kenan Stadium. In the unlikely event of severe weather, the ceremony will be held in the Dean E. Smith Center.

General arrangements for the weekend are coordinated by the Commencement Committee and the University Events Office. If you have questions, please call (919) 962-0045 or (919) 962-3427.

Again, congratulations on your academic achievements. As you leave our great University, may your fond memories keep your years here alive and Carolina always on your mind.

Hark the Sound!

William H. Cosby, Jr. was born to William and Anna Cosby on July 12, Germantown Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Calling himself a "late bloomer," he did not realize the value of a formal education until after the first four days of boot camp in the U.S. Navy.  Cosby said, "Four years later in May, when I got out of the Navy, I hit the ground running from Norfolk, VA and immediately enrolled in Temple University in Philadelphia."

Bill Cosby is well known for his commitment to education.  He emphatically believes that the best assurance for a satisfying and rewarding life begins with knowledge.  Cosby himself went back to college, long after he had

achieved much of his success to obtain a masters degree as well as an Ed.D.  He has, in fact, applied this further education in his professional life.

Cosby has never stopped realizing the importance of challenging himself.  "People always say 'you don't need money, why are you still working?'  My answer is that it isn't about money.  That's academic.  It's about accepting the challenges of one's own ideas, clarifying the unanswered questions and pursuing the excitement of discovery."

"It is always a pleasure to see those fresh faces of the new graduates.  It's also fun to notice the relieved smiles of the parents who are wondering, 'Are they going to be all right?'  The unanswered questions are now really directed at them."

Mrs. Cosby is equally passionate about the importance of education and she too has attained an Ed.D.  Together, they have strived to promote the importance of a good education.  They have donated funds to a wide range of universities and delivered commencement addresses to further emphasize the importance of learning.

"Rationem educationis tuae reddere debeas."

SARS UPDATE
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Advisory
on SARS and Commencement

May 12, 2003

We at the The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill understand and appreciate the importance of Commencement to students and their families. We are also mindful of the need to protect the health of our university community, our visitors, and residents of our local communities.

That is why the University urges any individual who has recently lived in or visited a location affected by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) not to attend Commencement ceremonies or related activities if he or she has developed the following symptoms within 10 days of travel:

A fever greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38.0 degrees Celsius)
and
Respiratory problems such as a cough, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing.

People with these symptoms should immediately telephone a health-care provider for advice and to arrange a medical evaluation.

SARS-affected areas are those for which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued special travel advisories. Currently, the CDC travel advisory covers mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. (CDC regularly updates its advisories at www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/travel.htm. Additional University information, updated regularly, also is at http://www.ehs.unc.edu/workplace_safety/ueohc/sars_recs.htm.)

The University asks that students, their families and their guests err on the side of caution regarding this important public health matter. If there is any doubt about the presence of any symptom in a guest who has traveled to Chapel Hill from a SARS-affected country, he or she should not attend Commencement or other public events.

The University joins its graduates in looking forward to a safe Commencement weekend.
