Current Season
7th annual One-Act Festival
October 14-16
Featuring: Five One-Acts by Alan Ball and one student written piece.
Directed by Alex Thompson
The perfect young woman and her perfect young boyfriend in MADE FOR A WOMAN are perfect examples of the image conscious society in which we live. She has everything and he does too, and they have each other. All is fine until she feels duped by a case of over-packaging, her world falls apart, and she decides to take matters into her own hands in a dangerous way. In BACHELOR HOLIDAY a mouse, caught in a glue trap, causes three roommates to discuss the meaning of life, death, yuppiedom, karma and the harsh reality of their place on the food chain. Over a POWER LUNCH a highly ambitious couple battle for power and control of their relationship even though they've just met. So serious are they that they even use the wait staff as tools of jealousy. In THE M WORD two ambitious executives decide that they are good for each other and proceed to negotiate a future together. As they're so caught up in the corporate lifestyle, this truly is a negotiation and in the end, they agree to "merge." YOUR MOTHER'S BUTT focuses on a therapist desperately searching for clues to help her seriously disturbed young patient. As the patient rattles on about shoes and belts, he recalls a dream he had about his mother, and the therapist thinks she's got her answer. A perhaps too-honest young woman makes A PROPOSAL to her husband, explaining to him (with the aid of a flow chart and metaphors about pottery) why she should be allowed to seek physical attention from another man.
Children’s Play: Peggy the Pint Sized Pirate
November 18-19
Directed by Clare Shaffer
We were contacted by the Site Director of an after-school program for Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools, who was interested in having Company put together a short play to perform for her students. She has about fifty K-5th graders, and feels that they would love the opportunity to have the arts brought to life in their school.
We have selected a one-act children’s play about Peggy, a young, vertically-challenged wanna-be pirate. She finds herself in the midst of adventure on the high seas, and has to rescue her crewmates when they are kidnapped by a terrifying sea monster. With the help of the mermaids, barnacles, and oysters she encounters along the way, Peggy proves to everyone that there are more important things that height and that she is worthy of joining the pirate crew!
The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (Abridged)
December 3-4
Directed by Catherine Arvay
The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (Abridged) by The Reduced Shakespeare Co. is a parody of the plays written by William Shakespeare with all of them being performed (in shortened form) during the show by only three actors. Typically, the actors use their real names and play themselves rather than certain characters. The fourth wall is nonexistent in the performance with the actors speaking directly to the audience during much of the play, and some scenes involve audience participation. The director and stage crew may also be directly involved in the performance and become characters themselves.
The Vagina Monologues
February 24-26
Directed by Clare Shaffer
The Vagina Monologues is made up of a varying number of monologues read by a varying number of women. Every monologue somehow relates to the vagina, be it through sex, love, rape, menstruation, female genital mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, the variety of names for the vagina, or simply as a physical aspect of the body. A recurring theme throughout the piece is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality.
Every year a new monologue is added to highlight a current issue affecting women around the world. Every V-Day thousands of local benefit productions are staged to raise funds for local groups, shelters, crisis centers working to end violence against women.
Spring Awakening
March 24-26
Directed by Katie Moylan.
Spring Awakening is a rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. It features music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. Set in late-19th century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. The original play was banned in Germany for a while due to its portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score. Spring Awakening received eleven 2007Tony Award nominations, winning eight, including Tonys for best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor.
