Unit 2: Constructing National Identity
Writing Spotlight: Logos & Organization

unit project

Unit 2 project: speech

Purpose: to persuade and call to action
Audience: UNC students milling about in the Pit--assume a college audience that believes racism is no longer a real problem in progressive, Western nations
Writing Focus: organization, concision, dynamic introduction & conclusion

In a 4-5 minute oral presentation, convince a (presumably) uninterested audience of your peers that racist attitudes remain a pervasive problem in both Ireland and America. Use a brief anecdote concerning Irish history and current race relations in Ireland (refer to the student-created reference page) as a point of entry into a more sustained discussion of race issues in contemporary America. The larger, second part of your argument should also point to historical events (distant or recent) that inform current American attitudes towards people of other ethnicities or nations.

After identifying the problem and discussing its possible origins, propose a course of action that will move towards correcting this particular American problem. You may ground your "solution" in any number of variables, including: educational reform, revision of law enforcement practices, suggestions for new ways to "remember" history, shifts in American international policies, transformation of the colloquial speech we use to talk about race, etc.

Each student's speech should include:

However you divy up your time among these different sections, make sure the total running time does not exceed 5 minutes nor fall short of 4 minutes.

Quicktime files of your practice presentations will be linked off this page by early Sunday afternoon. You need to complete commentary on your peers' work by noon on Monday. As Sunday is Halloween, make sure you schedule in time to do this. Using the rubric immediately above, you will comment on the presentations of the three students whose names fall BELOW your own. Make sure to include me each time you send comments back to your peers. (Your comments this time around will provide the last variable I reference in determining your participation grade for Unit 2.)

Example: Sandeep will comment on the presentations of Rachel, Justin and Corey.

Comment on those three who are bold-faced for brownie points (be sure to cc me).
