Writing Exercises: Dissecting Editorials

time allotted: 30 minutes

Stage #1: Silently read this editorial article, then informally discuss it as a class, going over the five different categories listed below for Stage #2. [approximately 10 minutes total]

Stage #2: After silently reading this editorial article, each peer-review group will answer one set of questions (as assigned below), and then each group will share their findings with the class [approximately 20 minutes total]

These categories will inevitably overlap . . .

Category A: Identify the Basics [Whitney's group]

• argument/thesis
• main supporting points (find 2-5 central ideas)

Category B: Identify the Targeted Audience [Michelle's group]

• use of polarizing speech (e.g. name-calling, inflammatory adjectives, etc.)?
• use of obscure terminology (e.g. technical terms, Latin words, etc.)?
• use of dramatic imagery (e.g. descriptions of violence, etc.)?
• use of generalizing, prejudicial descriptions relying on physical or behavioral indices?

Category C: Identify Degree of Dependence on Logos as a Persuasive Strategy [Rachel's group]

• to what degree does the author provide a seemingly objective, historical context?
• does the author present a shocking paradox or bit of irony?
• does the author assign blame?

Category D: Identify Degree of Dependence on Pathos as a Persuasive Strategy [Jordyn's group]

• first, refer to all the bulleted variables under Category B . . .
• does the author present a shocking paradox or bit of irony?
• to whom does the author assign blame, and what tone does s/he assume in doing so?
• what emotions does the author intend to evoke from the audience?
