Writing Exercises: Active vs. Passive Voice
Directions
1) Take the sentence assigned your group and (individually)
alter it to eliminate passive voice.
2) Compare your sentences with those in your group, and choose your two favorite
new sentences.
3) Share with the class.
4) If you finish early, go ahead and modify the next sentence as a
group.
Sentences
1)
In present day Ireland, there is much turmoil concerning the mixing
of other races and nationalities with its own.
2) However,
the country is still suffering from racial tension which is causing tragedy in
the Muslim, African, and Chinese neighborhoods of Ireland.
3) These attacks are purely out of hate for the Muslim race and
are indicative of the type of racial tension that exists between immigrants
and the native Irish people.
4) Since the Irish have had mainly bad experiences with outsiders,
they are probably reluctant to welcome immigrants into the country.
