UNC Health Care System

October 31 , 2005

William L. Roper, M.D., MPH
Dean, School of Medicine, Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs, and CEO, UNC Health Care System, and

Mary A. Beck, MPH
Snr. VP of Planning & Program Development, UNC Hospitals

The UNC Health Care System (UNCHCS) aspires to be the nation's leading public academic health care system. In their presentation, Drs. William Roper and Mary Beck discussed how the UNCHCS has historically and is presently living up to its mantra: leading, teaching, caring. To these ends, UNCHCS researchers have recently been awarded several large, collaborative grants from the National Institutes of Health, thus positioning faculty and staff as leaders in areas such as obesity research and cystic fibrosis. Over 22% of the state's doctors either schooled or trained at UNC Hospitals. And, in 2004-2005, doctors at UNC hospitals conducted almost 700,000 outpatient visits. Though sometimes the hopitals and the university exist in "parallel universes," the contribution of UNCHCS to the mission of the university is unmistakable.
